You Don’t See

Don’t do that, don’t mock me,

don’t shake your head and scoff.

You have no idea who I am

or what it takes to set me off.

You don’t know what’s in my head

or the voices in my mind.

There are things that I‘ve seen,

you’re lucky you will never find.

You don’t know betrayal

or violence like I know.

Addiction, helplessness,

or the burdens that these tow.

You don’t see the flashbacks

of his sick and twisted face,

nor see the blood on my hands,

and the effort not to leave a trace

of sweat, blood and tears,

mixed with laughter so deranged.

You’d wish you’d never met me

and seen the ways that I have changed.

Next time you want to laugh at me

I’ll show you my scars

to give you a look at hell;

to show how lucky you really are.
