I can dream about you
By Darla P
Summary: Sometimes all you can do is dream of that special person…
XxxxX
She had only seen him once before, on a horse event a couple of weeks earlier, but she didn’t pay too much attention to him then, his red hair, his blue eyes that were sparkling and the annoying smirk in the corner of his mouth. She didn’t even bother to look at him, okay, she did look, but only to confirm that he was not her type.
All that changed this weekend when the country’s biggest horse arrangement took place, and she once again looked into those blue eyes of his. She did look a little closer this time and was shocked to realize this guy was actually kind of cool.
As day one slowly passed by, she started to search for him in the crowded area. And as her eyes spotted him, she could swear her heart skipped a beat and no matter how much she wanted to, she couldn’t take her eyes off him.
Dorothy sighed sadly, she had promised herself she wouldn’t fall for any other guy. For her it was like, been there, done that. She had been hurt too many times and she didn’t want to put herself through the same pain again. It was always the same, fall in love, if you’re lucky, get together, then when you think you’re in heaven, everything shatters and you once again find yourself crying on your bed. No, she’d promised herself she wouldn’t fall in love, but that was a promise she couldn’t keep. And everything was Lex’s fault.
She didn’t know anything about him, but what she could tell by looking at him, he seemed to know how to charm a girl. Hardly one second went by without a girl was by his side. Dorothy hated to admit it, but she wished he could pay a little more attention to her. It was a stupid thought. She shouldn’t be jealous at all, because none of these girls should mean anything to him. That is because he already has a girlfriend, someone he loves.
Dorothy tried to look the other way, to not think of him. He was off limit, there was no way he could be interested in her, so why the hell did he occupy her mind?
The day turned into night, and all Dorothy could think of was him, Lex. She really didn’t have a reason to, but she looked forward to the party at the end of the next day – if only Lex could be there. As she thought of him, she couldn’t help but wonder if he was as good in bed as he was at the back of the horse. Dorothy shook her head as she realized what she was doing. She tried to concentrate on something else, but it was useless. Lex’s mother was a friend of the family and that meant they were allowed to use the house’s shower. Something Dorothy wouldn’t have had the slightest thought of, if it weren’t for the image of a naked Lex in her shower that kept flashing through her mind…

“So here you are, I didn’t think you could cook?” A teasing voice brought Dorothy out of her day dreaming. She felt an arm sneak around her waist and the words were spoken in a husky voice next to her ear.
Dorothy tensed, almost dropping the knife she was chopping salad with. She turned her head to see who this person was. The voice sounded all too familiar. The voice she had dreamt of yesterday. Now it was late and the food needed to be ready in one hour, or the party would be ruined. Dorothy was stressed, she loved helping out in the kitchen, but today, she didn’t seem to do anything right. Her mind was somewhere else and food was the last thing she was thinking of.
“So what ya done with the rabbit food, hey everyone – salad is for the suicidal!”
Dorothy couldn’t help but laugh. She didn’t even need to look; the person could only be Lex. No one would be that crazy. His arm was still around her waist as Lex leaned over her shoulder, snatching one piece of the vegetable.
“I thought it was dangerous eating my salad,” Dorothy said, trying to hide the nervous feeling. She knew he was only playing around, but having him this close made her heart race.
All too soon, Lex let go but when Dorothy met his gaze, he was grinning at her. She wanted to punch him and kiss him at the same time. Dorothy was confused; she had never met a guy like Lex. He was wild, passionate, and totally nuts, but that was what made him so charming.
Dorothy reached for a piece of salad and when she was about to put it in her mouth, Lex snatched it from her and with a grin, walked away. Before he left the room, he dipped the vegetable in honey and tasted it.
“Umm, sweet!” he playfully slapped Dorothy’s back before disappearing through the door.

The party was on and the dinner was ready to Dorothy’s big surprise. Everything seemed to be working great, but right now she didn’t have to think of food, or the guests or anything like that. Dorothy was free to enjoy the party, and so she did. Lex sat opposite of her at the table and for Dorothy things couldn’t be better, well, maybe if he’d sat next to her, really close…
Dorothy gave herself a mental slap for letting her mind wander.
The band kept on playing and the room was filled with joy and laughter. A love song started to play and Lex pretended to sing straight to Melanie, Dorothy’s younger friend sitting next to her.
Melanie blushed, hating the fake attention she was getting. “This is when we’re supposed to switch places,” she whispered into Dorothy’s ear. Dorothy just shrugged it off, laughing.
“Ah I think you’ll survive,” she teased, whispering back while glancing at Lex. Melanie was right, they really should switch places. Because there was nothing she wanted more than to have Lex looking at her that way. Not that it was for real, but it was better than nothing and that was all Dorothy had, nothing…
Hours passed by and Dorothy was enjoying every second with Melanie and Lex at her table. This was not that kind of party she was used to, but it didn’t matter it was fun anyway. She hadn’t had much to drink, only a glass of wine, and a coke, mixed with beer, which to her surprise tasted really well. Lex didn’t seem much like a drinker himself, Dorothy had mixed feelings about that, of course it was a bit boring, because usually much can happen if you’re drunk, things that won’t usually happen, but at the same time it was admirable, it once again proved he was not like any other guy.
By now it had turned dark outside; lots of people had already called it a night. Dorothy’s’ parents were still there though, as well as Lex’s mother, still working in the kitchen. The party had somehow continued outside, there it was much cooler, almost chilly. Melanie had been picked up by her mother long time ago and Dorothy had begun wondering if it was worth staying, things seemed a bit boring all of the sudden.
Dorothy scanned the darkness, that’s when she spotted Johnny. He must have looked at her because when their eyes met, he gestured for her to come over. Sighing, she did. Johnny was definitely not attractive, he was in fact a bit disgusting, have had way too much too eat and was way too old to be interested in teens and young women like Dorothy. But when he’d had a little too much to drink, he seemed to think he became irresistible all of the sudden.
As soon as Dorothy came up to him, a chubby arm placed itself around her shoulders; she let it stay there for a while, not wanting to make a scene.
“You know I like you don’t you?”
The words seemed slimy as they left his mouth, Dorothy shivered.
“Yeah, so you’ve said.”
“I mean it.” whisper
“Come by sometime, I’m always at home, you can come anytime you want…” Johnny.
Dorothy nodded, no longer paying attention to what Johnny was saying. Her eyes had once again settled on Lex’s red hair and she was lost.
“Hey, I can see what you’re looking at, but remember what I said, I like you…”
“Yeah, I heard that Johnny… uhm, thanks…” being a bit polite would never hurt, would it?
“Why do you think you’ve never seen me with a girl?” Johnny.
Dorothy got the point, but decided it was safer to keep quiet. She knew the real reason, at least the most logical one. Why Johnny was never seen with a girl, well, just look at him, what girl could find him attractive?
Johnny suddenly leaned closer and for one horrifying moment, Dorothy thought he would try to kiss her. She knew she would not hesitate, she’d slap him, but that would cause a scene, and the last thing she wanted was to explain to her parents. But he didn’t, instead he whispered something in her ear. Dorothy must have looked extremely uncomfortable, because in that moment Lex got up from his chair and headed over to her.
“Excuse me for one second,” he grabbed Dorothy’s arm and Johnny was forced to remove his.
“Do you need some rescue?” Lex’s smirk and meaning look toward Johnny made Dorothy’s legs go weak. She only managed a nod.
“I had a feeling you’d like that yeah,” Lex smiled. He turned to Johnny. “I’ll borrow Dorothy for a while, hope you don’t mind,” his voice was faked sweetness as he spoke and Dorothy could hardly keep herself from laughing. She suddenly felt nervous.
They left Johnny standing there and walked away together, Lex didn’t stop until they were on a safe distance from the rest of the people. Leaning back against the wall of the large red building, Dorothy realized she should say something. She looked at Lex.
“Thanks, that was a bit creepy,” she smiled.
Lex nodded. “I can understand if he’s desperate, he can’t get much, as to speak…”
“No…”
“But he should know better than to hit on you, gosh if that comes out, he’ll be history - if I know your father right.” Lex.
Dorothy laughed. “I think so yeah.”

Time passed quickly and none of them knew how long they’d been standing there.
“Maybe we should go back before or dear mothers start looking for us,” Lex suddenly said and Dorothy could have sworn there was something in his voice that said he didn’t really want this moment to end, or maybe that was just wishful thinking…
“Yeah maybe we should. I should go home anyway… it’s getting late.”
Entering the cafeteria again, Lex and Dorothy realized there was no one left of the guests, even Johnny had given up. Dorothy looked around, wondering where everyone was, how could she have missed the fact that everyone had left? She glanced at Lex, wondering if he was thinking the same.
Suddenly they got aware of voices from the kitchen, giving each others a quick look; they headed in the direction of the voices.
“And where have you two been?” the question was thrown at them as soon as they stepped into the room. The voice sounded a bit harsh, but the look at the woman’s face read something different, was it amusement?
Lex rolled his eyes at his mother, smiling mysteriously.
“Why are you still here? I thought you said you’d go home…” Dorothy asked her parents.
“We were waiting for you.”
Dorothy couldn’t come up with anything to say, she nodded. So this was it, time to go home. She wished she could just grab Lex and run away with him. It was late, but she didn’t want this day to end, tomorrow everything would be over and she didn’t know when she’d get to see him again, if she’ll get to see him again. She hoped so…
Dorothy heard her mother speak, Lex’s mother said something, but she couldn’t concentrate on what. She looked at Lex, he looked back.
Back outside the building, with the door locked and everyone ready to leave, Lex walked up to Dorothy.
“Hey, don’t get yourself in some more old-fat-men-wants-to-get-you-in-bed-trouble because I may not be there to rescue you,” he whispered in a teasing voice.
“Dorothy smiled. “I can take care of myself, but I can’t say I didn’t like what you did.”
Lex returned the smile.
“I gotta go, mom’s waiting,” he gave Dorothy a hug that she wished could have lasted forever, then he walked up to his car and Dorothy walked the other way, following her mother.
Yeah, there were things she wanted to happen, things she knew would be nothing more than her fantasy, but despite that, this weekend would be something she’d remember a long time, and yes, she’d miss Lex, she didn’t know for how long. Maybe she was just caught by the moment, maybe her lonely mind just wanted someone to think of, or maybe there was more than that, only time could tell. Dorothy didn’t know if what she felt for Lex right now was love, or just a crush, some sort of attraction.
Neither did she know if she’d get to see him again, maybe next year, but she couldn’t be sure. She could only hope. And if they couldn’t be together in real life at least they could be together in her dreams…

The End.
