Chapter two - Shattered Dreams
AN/ This was meant as a oneshot, but I decided to continue.
This chapter is kind of short, and a bit ‘angsty’, hope that is okay.
This story is based on real events, but I think I’ll give it a happy ending,
even though reality wants something different.

The rain was pouring down outside the window, it was cold and the whole world felt grey and boring. A week had passed since she last saw him. It had been an autumn-party for members of a western club, and the usual place for those kinds of events was of course Dorothy’s farm. It was a big farm; many people would call it a ranch, because of the never ending activity of horse contests and breeding that was going on. Dorothy was practically born and raised at the country side, she was a country girl, but she didn’t look like most people would categorise as one. Dorothy loved clothes, but wasn’t into fashion. She didn’t need to, she made her own style and it looked good on her slim body.
This weekend was what she’d been looking forward to for so long, that special Saturday. She’d been sure he’d bee there, but she hadn’t been prepared for what would happen.
Dorothy had seen Lex a couple of times since the summer, but only in the presence of both hers and his parents. When she thought back at this Saturday, she realized she’d been stupid to think this time could make a different. Lex had a girlfriend, Dorothy knew that, but somehow she’d tried to deny it, to tell herself that maybe he didn’t have someone after all. But those dreams came crashing down on her the minute she saw them walk up to her outside the cafeteria. He had his arm around her waist. It was in that moment Dorothy knew she’d been right, Lex really had a girlfriend.
She’d been hoping this weekend would be at least a little bit like their time together earlier this summer, but seeing them together made her realize that would never happen, not today, and probably never in her future either. The only thing to do now was to forget about Lex…
He has the cutest smile. Dorothy was surprised to realize she’d never thought of it before. Then another thought struck her, maybe she’d never seen him smile like that before. He looked so happy with that girl beside him; it made it harder for Dorothy to hate her. After all, Lex was happy, and that should be the only thing that matters…
Every time Dorothy looked at her, the glares were answered with a kind smile. Dorothy wanted to scream out loud. What was wrong with that girl? Was she stupid? Or did she sense that something was wrong; could she possibly know what those looks meant? Was that the reason for her kind smiles? Dorothy wanted to hate her, but she couldn’t.
What could Lex possibly see in her? The girl was not even pretty, she had a bad haircut, an ass that was twice as big as Dorothy’s and she looked really weird. Dorothy knew it was wrong to judge someone by her looks, but she also realized it was what her jealous mind needed to cope.
The hours passed and Dorothy tried to not care about Lex, most of the time she was talking to Melanie who was there too, happily oblivious to what was going on.
Despite the fact that the girlfriend’s presence bothered her terribly much, Dorothy had quite a good time. Okay she was disappointed but at the same time none of it mattered because at least she got to see Lex, she got to talk to him. If they couldn’t be anything else, at least they were friends.
That was what she thought she would be able to tell herself. Forgetting about Lex was a lot harder than she had thought, in fact it was impossible. Now he was gone again and her life was back to normal. Her daily routines suddenly felt all too boring when all she could think of was him. His eyes, the way he smiled at her and his stupid jokes that she always laughed at.
Not even her horses and the Chihuahuas could take her mind off him. She could be out riding for hours, or playing in the garden with the dogs, either way she would let her mind wander back to last summer… to him….

It was still cold outside, and Dorothy knew it would be long until spring came. A whole winter would have to pass, she’d have to stand the cold and the snow, just living for the fact that he’d be there again next year.
Next yeah, Dorothy said the words out loud. It felt like an eternity. She wished she’d known Lex a little better, maybe she should call him? No, she didn’t dare. Besides why would he want to talk to her, he had his life back home. She would have to live hers, without him…
Dorothy didn’t know what next summer would bring, and she didn’t allow herself to hope, she knew she’d only be disappointed once again. But one thing was sure; Lex would be there again as the next years horse show went off, if her feelings for him would be the same, she didn’t know…
…only time could tell.
