A/N: Um… Well, yes. I’m having a little bit of trouble getting this story off in the right direction, so bear with me if it seems all out of whack. I hope I’ll get it going the right way soon enough. :)
“Yes, that’s true.” Said Mr. Larson, Devin’s English teacher. “But that doesn’t mean we should all be rebels.”
“I know.” Said Devin, confiding in the only teacher that she actually liked. “But I’m not a rebel. I’m just me.”
“I know, Devin. And of course I see that, but it doesn’t mean everyone else sees you that way. Some people think that you’re different on purpose to make them angry.”
“I really don’t care what they think.”
“I don’t blame you. Neither do I.”
The bell that ended second period rang and Devin’s heart sank. Math class was next. She really did not want to deal with Mr. Evens, nor did she want to see Josh’s ugly face.
“You don’t want to go to Algebra, do you?” Said Mr. Larson, reading Devin’s mind exactly. He picked up the phone and dialed.
“Patrick? Hey, can I keep Devin for the period? I need some grading done and she’s the only one I trust to do it… All right. Thanks much.”
He hung up the phone.
“You’re off the hook.”
“Thank you so much!” exclaimed Devin, jumping on her teacher and hugging him.
“No problem. Just have a seat and do homework or something to keep you busy.”
“All right.” Said Devin, sitting down as the bell rang and Mr. Larson began class.
“Just take the opportunity today to work on your essays. If you aren’t using this time to work, though, I’ll flog you. Got that?”
Everyone in the class nodded their heads and groaned.
“Sometimes I feel like they are a bunch of little robots.” Said Mr. Larson as he turned to work on his computer.
“Hey.” Came a voice next to Devin. “How are you?”
She looked up to her left. It was Todd, the boy in the band she had met a few days earlier.
“Oh, I’m great, how are you?”
“Pretty peachy. You the new TA for this class or something?”
“No, just… Well, just ditching math class.”
“Ah. Understandable. I hate math, too.”
“Me too.” Said a short, blond boy from behind Todd.
“Oh, this is my brother, Eric.” Said Todd. “Eric, this is Devin. She’s in the choir.”
“Ah, cool. You musical dorks.” Said Eric.
“And what do you do if you aren’t a ‘musical dork’ like your brother?” Asked Devin sarcastically.
“I am cool. I’m a theatre geek.”
“Oh, nice. Darn theatre geeks.”
“Haha, very funny.” Laughed Eric.
“Do you want to be flogged?” Asked Mr. Larson, turning to look at the group.
“Sorry.” Todd and Eric chimed in unison.
“Talk to you later.” Said Eric as the two boys turned around and sat in their seats.
“Talking to boys now, are we?” Said Mr. Larson. “What happened to my little shy girl?”
“It’s not that I’ve been shy, it’s that I’ve never had any friends. For some reason this Todd boy decided to talk to me, and now his brother, too.”
“Well, if you’re going to make friends, they are good kids.”
“Yeah?”
“Yup. Eric is very intelligent, like you. Todd, too. He skipped a grade in home schooling. That’s why he and his brother are in the same class. Todd is only sixteen, Eric just turned eighteen.”
“That’s pretty cool. And Eric doesn’t mind his brother being in the same class? I mean, most siblings would get jealous or something.”
“Oh no, they’re really close. Lucky guys. It’s not often that your brother is your best friend.”
“No, not often at all.” Said Devin, taking out her book 2010: Odyssey Two and cracking it open to chapter nineteen: Operation Windmill.
“You are such a nerd.”
“Shut up.” Devin giggled.
“What?” Asked Mr. Larson, turning to Devin.
“Nothing…” Said Devin, realizing who was actually talking to her. She lowered her voice to a whisper. “Why do you always do that to me?”
“Sorry.” Said Lucifer, leaning on the table next to Devin. “Having a better day today?”
“Yes, strangely, I am actually having a good day.”
“That is strange. But I am very glad. I like to see you smile.”
“Thank you, I like to smile.”
Mr. Larson looked over at Devin, obviously confused as to why she was whispering to herself.
“Look, Dev, I think you’d better go. Teach thinks I’m insane. And I actually like this one.”
“Sorry.” Said Lucifer. “I guess I should. Please don’t let your good day go sour, all right?”
“I won’t.”
“See you when you get home.”
“Good.” Smiled Devin. Lucifer reached over and kissed Devin on the cheek, sending a warm sensation across the side of her face. “Bye.”
Devin sat in silence for the rest of the period, aside from the occasional thirty-second conversation with Mr. Larson, reading her book. She became so absolutely enthralled with the splendor of Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction that time seemed to fly by and the bell rang for lunch time. She closed her book and put it in her back pack.
“Question.” Came a voice from behind her. Sometimes she wondered why people didn’t get her attention before they started talking to her. It seemed that they always came from behind and scared her.
“Yes?” She said turning around to see that it was Eric.
“Are you Christian?” He asked.
Devin looked at him for a moment. That was a very interesting question to randomly ask, she thought. She also did not know how to answer. The definition of a Christian is someone who believe is God and follows the teachings of Jesus, and she most definitely fell into those categories.
“Yes.” She said, finally.
“Well, I guess I should tell you about Christian Club, then.”
“Christian club? We have a Christian Club on campus?”
“Yeah, of course we do. It’s right here at lunch every Thursday.”
“Thursday, huh? Well, that would be today. I guess I could try it out.”
“You should.” Said Todd from behind his brother. “It’s loads of fun. Especially with Mr. Larson, he’s crack up.”
“Yeah, he’s the best advisor we could ask for!” Said Eric.
“He’s the coolest.” Said Mr. Larson.
“You are insane.” Said Devin. “Okay, yeah, I’d love to stay and try Christian Club. Maybe it’ll be a place where I can actually fit in.”
“Of course.” Said Eric, smiling at Devin. “You fit in right here with my brother and me.”
Devin smiled and looked into Eric’s eyes. Somewhere that she fits in? She’d never had a place like that before. Now she felt like she had friends. Human friends. For once she actually felt like a normal girl.
“Thank you.” She said as she took a seat next to Eric and he introduced her to the rest of the members of the Christian Club.
Short. Um, not the most interesting. Sorry. I’ll try harder next chapter. :(
