"Be yourself"

That was your line

And I agreed

It suited you fine.

You lifted me up

When I was down

When I was depressed

You brought me around.

Confidence you gave me

That no one else could do

Eventually began to see

The light that was within you.

Everything was going great

You were almost mine

Suddenly, it all stopped short--

You had cut the line.

I wondered, wondered why and how

And several months did pass

I still tried to talk to you

A good friend, nonetheless.

Then she came and crashed my world

Apparently yours too

It was only then I saw

That she was changing you.

You lied, you changed, you hid your views

To yourself you weren't true

Just to please this stupid girl

Surely, I thought, you would lose.

She bought your schemes, she bought them all

And couldn't see right through your wall

Yet you were so fake, that I knew

You just weren't yourself at all.

If she was falling into love

The you that wasn't you

She loved a man that wasn't there

You were not as true.

"Be yourself"

That was your line

And I agreed

It suited you fine.

Well now that's gone

Gone all to waste

Took yourself

Ground into paste.

You never really did need change

'Cause I accepted you

Every little flaw you had

But now what can I do?
