“So, wanna hang out today?” Kay asks while we walk home from school.
“I can’t, I have a major History test on Friday and I really need to study for it” Amy says.
“Why do you need to study? You have a ninety five average” Kay looks at her incredulously.
Amy just shrugs.
“I have to go to a meeting,” Tessa puts in.
“What type of meeting?” I ask her.
“It has something to do with the environment, I could go in more detail but you guys would just zone out after a while.” She told us.
“Well what about you Eli?” Kay turns to me.
“Are you kidding, I am not hanging out today, after picking all that gum, I need to take a long shower and finish any homework that I didn’t do,” I tell them, which was a lie, I just don’t really feel like hanging out today.
“Fine,” Kay said sighing.
“I guess I’ll catch up on homework too.”

Every time I get home I never know what to expect. This is one of the reasons why I don’t invite any of my friends over. Every time I go home there is something weird that happens. We always have one catastrophe after another due to my little brother and his stupid experiments. I don’t want my friends to come over and see something weird like a departed soul leaving our house or a pack of werewolves in our house.
First off they would be terrified and second they would find out I am a witch. And that is something I do not want to happen for a looong time. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love my friends and I do trust them, but I just don’t want another version of the Salem witch trials to happen, you know? What if they accidentally, I don’t know, blurt out to the whole world that my family and I have magical powers?
That is a chance I am not willing to take.
For now anyways.
I was surprised to see that nothing too weird was going on when I got home.
There wasn’t any dragons running loose, there wasn’t a werewolf convention and there weren’t any souls of the dead coming back to get revenge on those who did them wrong.
All in all I think today might actually be, (dare I say it?) Normal.
I walk into the kitchen and see my mom and dad sitting on the breakfast table, looking worn out and tired.
So much for being normal.
“Hey mom, dad!” I say giving them both a kiss on the cheek “is anything wrong? You look really tired?”
“Hey sweetie,” mom says sounding drained, “Nothings wrong we just didn’t have any sleep, that’s all”
“Yeah and I think our magic is being drained” Dad says while rubbing his eyes.
“Alex!” Mom shoots my dad an annoyed look.
“Your magic is being drained, why?” I ask concerned.
“No, no, I meant it feels like our magic is being drained,” Dad answers quickly.
“Oh,” I say not fully convinced. It seems like they don’t want to tell me something so I am not going to pry and I’ll wait until they’re ready to tell me what’s wrong with them.
I take a good look at my mom and dad. Her long dark hair is bunched up in a bun with wisps of hair coming out of it. Her dark eyes have bags around it. She really does look worn out. It seems like something is really tiring her out.
Maybe it has something to do with work.
My mom is a healer witch, (a human equivalent to a doctor) she cures magical creatures that are sick or hurt. The problem is she is the only healer witch on this side of the earth’s hemisphere (most of them were burnt during the Salem witch trials and some of them got scared and ran of to the other side of the planet or are in hiding).
I guess all the supernatural creatures (like werewolves, vampires, witches etc.) she gets would wear her out but even then she wouldn’t look so drained. Although she looks like she is in her late thirties she is actually three hundred and seventy years old (the average witch or wizard has the life span of a thousand years, actually most supernatural creatures do). My dad is a bit older than her; he just turned four hundred last week.
My dad is no better, he too, looks worn out and tired. And he hasn’t cracked one joke this whole day! I am getting really worried.
My dad, whose magic allows him to protect nature (to the best of his ability), doesn’t have much stress. For him to be like this is a bit suspicious.
I give one last look at them and walk upstairs to my room.
I walk over to my room and think back to what happened today.
I can’t believe Cedric came back, after four years.
But there was something different about him this time.
I don’t know what it is, but I want to find out.
And I want to know why he left all those years ago without saying word.
And I want to know why he didn’t say anything this morning.
Maybe he really did forget me.
I walk over to my bed and lay down.
All of a sudden a wave of drowsiness that I didn’t know I had washed over me.
The last thought I had before falling asleep was I will talk to him tomorrow.

It was dark.
My arms and legs ached from the shackles that bound them together.
My flesh was covered with blood because of all of the beatings I had gotten that morning.
My stomach churned with hunger and my throat was hoarse and dry.
I have to find a way to get out of here.
Yes. I thought. I will get some strength and I will leave this place.
“You are so pathetic,” I heard a cruel voice sneer at me.
“You think you can actually escape?”
How did he know what I was thinking?
”Oh you pathetic creature, I read your mind”
“Don’t you remember what day it is? You will never be able to escape” he said laughing.
What does he mean? What is today?
“You’re weak, and after today, I’ll be surprised if your still alive”
I don’t understand what he is talking about.
I don’t care what he says.
I will escape.
I turned around to see a little bit of light shine through the small window above me.
I finally realized what he meant.
Tonight is the full moon.
