She crept along the soggy pass,
skirts soaked with mud and old, dried grass.
The moon shone brightly up above
and lit the pathway to her love.

She stole her way down to the moat
and found a secret, waiting boat.
But though she searched 'round every tree,
her love was nowhere she could see.

She knew he would not leave, but wait
and help her flee her father's hate.
For he denied her chosen groom
though their love could not but bloom.

Now she began to fear the worst--
perhaps, after all, their love was cursed.
Then when at last her love she found,
she fainted dead upon the ground.

Red met with brown and mixed with mud
beside two bodies soaked in blood.
For thrust into her lover's chest
was a familiar knife--her father's best.
