Summary: Everything is supposed to be in its proper place and is supposed to be used at its proper time. So when obsessive-compulsive Crys Borwick sees rebel Zack Fairworth completely out of his place in the drama club, chaos completely ensues. And Crys just won't take it sitting down.
Chapter One: OCD and Bad Days
Crystal Marissa Borwick was having a bad day.
And whenever she was having a bad day, she had a tendency to clean up anything that was out of place, just to make sure “there was a little bit of good in a bad day.” Crys was very particular about things like that, and she liked everything in its place. That's the way life was. Things out of place will be placed back at the proper time, most especially if it weren't used yet.
But today everything seemed to be out of order, and it pissed her off.
Firstly, she lost her Math homework. Crys NEVER lost Math homework. She never lost homework at all. But when she opened her binder (which shall be explained later, for it is a very complex binder), the Math homework wasn't there. After checking all over her binder, she realized she had left it on her desk last night. That unfortunately earned her a detention.
Crys never gets detention.
Groaning in exasperation, Crys headed off to History and she was unfortunately late. Detention number two. Plus, they had a pop quiz, wherein Crys had forgotten around two items. That ruined her perfect 100 class standing, which she worked hard for. And that definitely wasn't good for her.
Crys never liked ruining things.
So during lunch, Crys was practically ecstatic to get her green salad and chicken fingers from the cafeteria. She rushed past the eager and hungry freshmen, after all, she was the upper class-woman and grabbed a tray. Just as she approached the lunch lady for her daily salad and chicken fingers, she saw that the usual greens and golden browns she saw were gone. The lunch lady said that a boy up front had gotten the last ones.
Crys never had anything other than green salad and chicken fingers. They said she had to settle for the roast beef sandwich and chocolate pudding.
It wasn't bad, but Crys never had anything high-calorie.
So when Crys approached her close group of friends, she slammed her tray down and exploded like a red hot volcano. “Today has got to be the most annoying day of my life!!!” she screeched, and everyone looked up at her.
Everyone, meaning the whole cafeteria.
“Uh, Crys? You okay?” Anna Archibald asked uncertainly, and the most responsible girl of the group, AKA, Samantha Delaney immediately shook her head and slashed her finger across her throat, indicating that was definitely the wrong question.
“No, I am NOT okay!” Crys retorted in annoyance. “First, I lost my Math homework! I don't lose my Math homework! That got me my ever first detention! I don't GET detention, I ISSUE detention! Then because of that I was late for History, which means another detention! I don't get TWO detentions in one day! Then, whoop-dee-doo, we have a pop quiz and I totally forgot the last two items, which means that my 100 average will go down drastically!”
“Damn, that sucks,” Rianna Porter muttered, patting Crys' back reassuringly. “The day could go up. I mean, the green salad--”
“Don't get me started on that! I was so thrilled to get my green salad and chicken fingers, and when I get there, they run out! Said some boy got the last set! I don't eat anything in school except for that! Now I'm stuck with a cow and high-calorie pudding!” Crys groaned and slammed her head on the table. The five girls, meaning Anna, Samantha, Rianna, Andrea Truman and Melanie Morgan, glanced at each other guiltily, looking down at their half-eaten chicken fingers and green salads.
“We can switch, Crys,” Rianna said quietly, handing Crys her green salad. The girls quickly piled up their chicken fingers and handed it to her. Crys smiled gratefully and bit into the warm finger food, but just as she was about to dig into her salad, the bell had rung to signal the end of lunch.
“Oh damn!” Crys yelled in aggravation, slamming the plastics closed before shoving them in her bag. “I'm gonna be late for Economics. I'll see you guys later! Ugh, thank God this is my last class for the afternoon!”
She rushed ahead, and the girls smiled wryly at each other. “I wonder what's going to happen to her Economics book,” Samantha mused quietly, fiddling with the cover of the plastic of the honey mustard sauce for the chicken fingers.
“Poor Crys,” Anna said worriedly, and Rianna nodded in agreement, just as she was taking a scoop of Crys' chocolate pudding. “I hope she won't break down during Eco. You know how the teacher is.”
“Mm, yeah, Miss Lemmings is hell.” Andrea shook her head sadly, cringing at the thought of seeing Miss Lemmings yelling at Crys.
“Miss Lemmings, I--”
“Miss Borwick, do you take this class as seriously as I think you do?” Miss Lemmings placed her hands on her hips, glaring at Crys angrily. Crys nodded furiously, trying to keep the frustrated tears in her eyes. “Then take care of your school books! They're the ones that can actually help you! I will not tolerate any bit of sloppiness in this class! This is AP Economics for heaven's sake!”
Crys shrunk down in her seat miserably, wanting to curl up inside a hole in the ground and rot. Because the bell rushed her so quickly, she totally forgot the covers of the plastic holders that hold the honey mustard sauce and vinaigrette dressing. She was absolutely livid, and she needed to get out of this class!
Once the bell signaled the end of Economics, Crys picked up her bag and sped out of the classroom. She groaned and leaned against the wall across her locker despondently, releasing her hair from her normal high ponytail in annoyance. She walked numbly into the auditorium, which was specially reserved for the Drama club. She was vice president and proud of it, since Rianna, one of her close friends, was so devoted to it as well being president.
“Hey Crys,” Rianna said distractedly as Crys entered through the backstage. Rianna was trying to fix Nate Carter's tie, since Nate didn't really know how to knot the tie the way it was supposed to. “Can you help Nate with this? I gotta run up to the sound system to check with Cady.”
Without another word, Rianna jumped offstage and rushed up the stairs in five seconds to the soundboard at the top of the auditorium. Crys sighed and moved over to Nate, fixing his tie quietly. Nate looked down at her with a small smile from his stature of 6'2. “You okay, Crys?” he asked, his British accent making her smile.
“I had the most appalling day ever, Nate, you have no idea.” Crys rolled her eyes and sighed, perfectly fixing his tie altogether. He smiled gratefully at her and ruffled her hair. “Need anything else?”
“Aside from a date with Rianna, no.” He grinned cheekily at her and she laughed. Nate had this major crush on her friend, and it was amusing how he was trying to win her affections. Apparently, he hadn't even tried, he just wanted to be close to her.
“I'll leave you to that.” Crys picked up her clipboard from its usual position near the wings. She was usually in charge of stage management backstage. Rianna took care of the soundboard with Cady, plus she was acting as one of the main roles. She checked the arrangement of the props on stage, the costumes and the curtains. She sighed and smiled in satisfaction. “Thank God this is going right.”
“Definitely.” Andrea, her close friend too, patted her shoulder and smiled. Andrea was a great actor, Crys mused, as Andrea assumed her position on the stage near Nate. Somewhere around here, Nichola Waterman, the director took her place in the audience part of the auditorium, snuggling up to a large auditorium seat.
“Okay, guys, let's get this going!” she called out, and Crys smiled before tapping her clipboard and changing the backdrop. Songs for a New World was gonna be hell of a production, she mused happily, as Rianna trotted down the stairs to go to her blocking position.
Of course, things had to go wrong today.
The soft piano music of the opening had started playing and the spotlight was going to flash on Andrea, who was Woman 1 for the production. She looked up, ready to sing with this brilliant faraway look on her face. Just as she was about to sing the first line, the doors burst open.
And Crys just could not believe who was sauntering down the aisle.
