Now it’s always once upon a time in New York City, well this time it actually starts in a little town in south Dakota, with three girls dressed in black standing in front of a freshly covered grave. The tallest looked down at the younger two. “It’s going to be okay Selena, don’t cry Sara. I promise that we will be together and I’ll take care of you.” The smallest hiccupped and tried to hold in her sobs. “But Serena, you are only sixteen years old.” “Don’t worry about it Saraphina I promise everything will be fine when they read Mama’s will.” She took the girls hands and walked slowly to the waiting car.
The office was dry and dusty, and smelled like mothballs and something stale and strong that Serena couldn’t identify. They all sat at the long table and Serena looked at her Aunt Edith sitting at the front with a Cheshire grin on her squinted and pointy face.
“Girls your mother gave me her most recent will, so Mr. Coopler will be reading it today.” Serena’s head shot up and she stared open faced at her Aunt, “Why would she give it to you? You haven’t spoken since I was five.” Aunt Edith’s face suddenly resembled a starving pit bull whose food had been yanked away. “She just did Serena. And that is that.” Mr. Coopler cleared his throat and rattled the papers. “Shall we begin?” Serena and her Aunt stopped glaring and nodded.
“This is the last will and Testament of Angelica Juliet Cassandra Prosper, dated March 15th 1930 everything I own I would like in a Trust for my three daughters, Serena Elizabeth Prosper, Selena Aurora Prosper, and Saraphina Kristine Prosper until the age that the youngest reaches her majority. Selena and Saraphina will be cared for by my older sister Edith McDougal, should she be alive, and Serena is to be placed in State care until the time she reaches twenty-one. A note to my girls I love you. Dine with the Angels.”
That’s, that.” Mr. Coopler said as he stood up and walked out.
“You mean Mama split us up?” Sara asked.
“Well you can’t expect me to take all of you.” Aunt Edith responded coolly.
“But why?” Lina whimpered.
“That’s not Mama’s will.” Serena stated calmly,
“Then who’s is it?” Aunt Edith smirked.
“Mama would never have split us up, she was always telling us sister’s need to be close, and she would never have given you control of her money, and she would never have told us to dine with the angels!” Serena finished her comment on a yell. “She would have Said Sleep with the angels, or Dance with the angels, never Dine.”
Aunt Edith’s bony face look like she just ate and entire lemon, “Well that’s what the lawyer said so that’s that.”
Serena wouldn’t believe so she pulled her sisters away and whispered a plan before they were split, “I promise we will go find the magic.” The day dragged on and Serena waited until the night guard at the orphanage looked in the room before wrapping her long brown hair up around her head and the she climbed out the window and ran to the hotel her Aunt was staying at. Seeing a small light she knocked at the window “Lina! Sara! Hurry up!” she hissed then helped them climb out the window and ran to the train tracks. They walked along the tracks for almost an hour before Serena saw what she was looking for. “This is it, come on!”
