Serena helped her sisters climb into an empty car before jumping in herself and closing the door just as the train began to rumble. “Can we go to sleep now Rena?”

Serena nodded and smiled “Of course you can, night Sara, night Lina.” Serena attempted to stay awake but it didn’t quite work out the way she thought. She closed her eyes for a second and opened them as the train pulled in Central Station she grabbed their bags woke her sister and slid out slowly, taking their hands she took off at a run. Getting lost in the crowds. They wandered around the city smiling at the newsies antics, Sara tugged on her skirt, “Serena I’m hungry.” Seeing a small store she nodded and told the girls to wait at the entrance. “Sir? Could you please tell me the price for the sandwich?” He looked at her and the waifs at the door, “’At’ll be a dollar and half Missy.” Sighing Serena pulled out her last three dollars and handed it to the man, “two please.” Serena thanked the man and handed Lina and Sara the food before walking again, Lina’s cough was getting worse and she had to find them shelter for the night.

As the night got colder Lina’s cough became more frequent. “Rena? I’m tired and my stomach hurts.” Serena looked at her sisters, tired and stumbling along, “wait here I’ll be right back.” She said her eyes fastened on the sign of an open shop. She walked in and looked around seeing a loaf of bread ‘two dollars?’ she sighed and put it back before heading to the medicines seeing a small glass bottle of cough tonic she lifted it up. ‘Thirty-four dollars?? I don’t have that kind of money, what am I supposed to do let Lina get sicker?’ she thought as she slid the bottle toward her pocket. Then she stopped their mother would tan her hide just for considering stealing. She sighed as she lifted it back up. Serena shrieked as a hand closed over her wrist. She let go of the bottle and it shattered on the tile. “Caught you this time!” The old man growled. “I was going to put it back!” Serena gasped out in fright. “I was going to put it back!” he mocked in high falsetto “Yeah! Right back into your pocket, lets see what the constables think!” Serena wrenched her arm from him and ran out the door. “Run Sara!” she screamed as she swept Lina into her arms and ran, seeing an open gate she ducked in and hid in the bushes behind a fountain. Pushing her sisters down she tried to control her breathing. As the man came in yelling, “Thief.” He stopped and noticed the gate, “Ha! I caught you vagabonds now, I’ll find you somewhere.” Lina breathed in, in preparation of a cough and Serena placed her hand over her mouth. She heard what sounded at first like a bird then a giggle. The man ran out the garden and down the block.

Giggles once again echoed in the garden. “What did you steal?” a lilting voice called. “Nothing! We didn’t steal a thing! Musical laughter echoed for a few moments after Serena’s declaration. “Oh?” said a deeper voice. “He seemed to think you did.”

Serena shook her head “We didn’t I was just looking at it. Who are you?’

Four figures stepped from the shadows the first stepped up in a dark gown ebony hair swirling around her waist. “How remiss of us, I am called Furina.” The second stepped forward to lift Lina from her hiding place, “Morrigan is what I am called.” Lina coughed and Morrigan gasped “Aine! This one is ill.”
