Author's Note: Getting along... the magic contest has ended, which is a relief for me because I suck at describing actions... urgh.... Now there will be things to settle down in the Darkness department :D
Rayne : Thank you!! Chapter 62 actually displays fine for me here. Is there something wong with opening the page?
pinkcar7956: THANK YOU :D
LuvMeCuzILuvCookiez: Thanks for the comment! Yes, I tend to write in the formal way (that's how I learn English), but I will try to get dialogues more informal in the coming stories :D
EternalxSnow Thank you! I think if you can actually imagine what is happening from the written version, it is more interesting here compared to the manga version XD
Chapter 63 Proof
Ki was walking back and fro inside his room, thinking of the events that had happened recently, especially of the Great Magician Contest when he met the man who claimed to be his father.
The strange blue-haired guy was first seen in the park when he went on a trip out of town. At that time he was already able to sense his Darkness powers. However, why couldn’t he relate the person with the brown-haired guy in school? Ki could not believe he was so careless. It would have been all strange for a Darkness user to disguise himself as a Light.
Besides, the headmaster seemed to know him quite well.
So, could he possibly be his real father?
But how could someone whom everyone believed to have died suddenly appeared and claimed his son so casually? As if nothing had happened?
Ki scratched his head in confusion. It was not like him to easily believe in a starnger’s words, even if he had someone he knew to back him up. Ki lifted the blinds a little with his finger and looked outside. Everything looked so peaceful as usual.
Perhaps it would be best to stop thinking about stuff that would disturb his cool.
Ki walked back to his bed and lay down in deep thought. Now that he had promised Anko to accompany her to a party in the weekend, the first thing to worry about was not someone called Hiwatari Ken, but it did bother him though. He didn’t understand why people like to stick with him; he didn’t understand why so many weird things happened to him. There were too many things he did not understand.
Didn’t people say like charges repel each other? If that is so, there should not be so many Darkness students bothering him.
Everyone was acting strangely. Yah, everyone. Ki had been living in a weird world. He closed his eyes, trying to take a nap when a sudden faint sound from the door alerted him at once. By reflex, Ki got up and shot an arrow of Darkness energy towards he direction of the sound.
His arrow was blocked by a hand, to be precise, the Darkness produced by the movement of a hand.
“My, my, take it easy, Ki-chan.”
Standing at the door was no one but the guy who claimed to be his father – Hiwatari Ken.
“How did you come in?” Ki did not care who he was, but why he was standing there.
Ken gave a chuckle. “Didn’t I tell you I am an expert in opening locks?” The guy joked.
“…” Ki did not show any expression indicating that his joke was funny.
Ken smiled again. “Is it me, or are you getting tense, Ki-chan?” He walked up towards him so that he was just standing beside the bed.
Sensing danger, Ki moved back a little and his hands grabbed the bedsheets tightly, trying to see what Ken wanted to do.
“With your strength now, you are not able to fight me.” Ken said as he bent down towards his son. “Shall we sit down and talk?” He smiled.
“Sit down? I don’t think what you are trying to do now is to sit.” Ki looked at him suspiciously.
“Oh yeah.” Ken retreated as he straightened himself up. “I was thinking of giving you a hug, but I guess you won’t allow me to do that unless I explain myself.”
“… and proof your identity,” Ki added.
“Proof?” Ken looked uneasy at first, but then he gave a broad grin. “I have the same hair and eye colour as you.”
“This is not proof.”
“Um… well, blue is not a common colour…” Ken curled his hair along his index finger, playing with it.
“Stop joking around!” Ki picked up a book beside him and threw it at Ken.
Ken noticed the ‘flying object’ at once and blocked it with a swift movement of his hand, which produced a layer of darkness acting as a shield. “You should not be throwing books around, Ki-chan.”
His son ignored him and looked elsewhere. “If you have nothing to say, get out.”
“Ki-chan…” Ken looked at him pleadingly.
“Get out!” Ki shouted.
“No way.” Ken suddenly became serious. “I come here to get back my son. There’s no way I am going before I achieve my purpose.”
“I don’t remember having a father that is like this. I have no father. He had died long ago!”
“Ki-kun, please listen to me, and look.” Ken closed his eyes. A dark spiral began to form around him, moving its way quickly around the room and shooting everywhere. Ki tried to dodge the blows, but the arrows did not seem to direct at him. He calmed himself down and stood aside, waiting to see what Ken was trying to show him.
“Ki, this darkness, the power that resides within us, is the best proof. Do you think Darkness chooses people easily? It does not. The ultimate Darkness shield was only found within the Hiwatari bloodline. Not anybody is able to use this, and I am sure you know.”
“…”
“Now, Ki, do you have the silver pocket watch which father gave you?”
“Huh?” Ki looked up, surprised at the sudden mentioning of the only thing grandfather had left him. “How do you know…?”
“You know what? The pocket watch actually came in a pair.” From his pocket, Ken produced a second watch, with the same shape, size and design, but coasted with gold instead of silver.
“That watch…”
“This belonged to your grandmother. She gave it to me so that I could give it to Rin, and father’s watch was meant for me. However,” the light in his eyes dimmed as he continued, “I don’t have the chance to do this now.”
“You… are you really my dad?” Ki asked slowly. Ken words were trying to make sense to him, and the proof he gave was convincing.
People can fake their identities, but never their powers.
Darkness is the best evidence for everything.
Ken nodded silently.
“What happened to the incident the night when mom was killed?”
“I don’t want to recall that, but I lost control of my power. I fled, because I was afraid I would lose you as well.” Ken sat down on Ki’s bed and looked up dreamily at the ceiling, which had nothing but white paint.
“Um… I will believe you.” Ki said softly.
Ken shot up from his seat at once. “Really? Ki-chan, you are so adorable.” He wrapped his arms around his son and gave him a tight squeeze.
“Get away from me at once!” Ki kicked his dad hard, sending him to the ground mourning in pain.
“That… that is not the correct way of welcoming your long-lost father.”
“If you dare to do that again, I am ending this father and son relationship!”
“Stay calm, Ki.” Ken put up his hands in defeat. “I will not do it again. In addition, I will also teach you how to master the power of Darkness.”
“Can that really be done?” Ki asked in astonishment. “Darkness is not something you can handle easily.”
“Of course it cannot, so you may need a long time to master it.”
“If it is a good thing, I can’t think of a reason not to do it. I will put my trust in you, dad.”
Two streams of tears ran down Ken’s eyes onto the floor, dripping. Ki looked at his father with a blank face. “Why are you crying?”
“I…” Ken rubbed his tears with his sleeves. “I am so happy to hear you call me ‘dad’, Ki-chan!” He jumped up with joy and ran towards his son with his arms wide open.
“Get away at once!” Ki shot darkness arrows towards him in response. “I will never call you ‘dad’ again!”
“Don’t be mean,” Ken looked at him with puppy eyes. “Oh yeah, by the way, there is a dinner this weekend which I am invited…”
“I know.” Ki cut his father’s sentence. “I know you must be invited due to your strong powers, so I don’t want to go. However, sadly I will be going.”
“Really?” Ken’s eyes brightened. “I was worried because I don’t know how to convince you to come with me.”
“Yah, I am not going with you.”
Another two long streams of tears. “Ki-kun… It has been so long before I can see you again… how can you do that to your father…?”
“I… I am going with my friend, but we will see each other at the party anyways.”
“Friend?” Ken’s spirits rose at the idea. “Is it Ruya-chan?”
“No. What makes you think she will be going?”
Ken pointed his index fingers against one another. “You know, Ruya-chan is cute… just like your mother.”
“I think mom is much more beautiful than that Light girl.” Ki turned away and said shyly.
He heard another chuckle from his dad, but did not turn back to see his reaction. Ki went over to his desk and sat down, continuing one of those many books he had started during the year.
“Who are you coming with then?” Persistent as he was, Ken approached him and asked.
“None of your business. You will know when the time comes.”
“I hope she is cute,” Ken joked, “but no matter what, I still prefer Ruya-chan.”
“Whatever you like.” As Ken was thinking to himself, Ki kicked him out of his room, locked it and pushed a cupboard against it.
“Ki! How can you do this to your dad?” Ki heard Ken’s shouts outside his room, but he did not care the least of it.
Rant: That's a nice way to treat your dad whom you have not seen for years :D But I don't think having doubts is a wrong thing...
