Epilogue
The alarm rang pulling Zenha from a dream she had rather been enjoying. Wentworth was back and he had taken her to dinner on the beach. Lake Michigan had been uncannily clear and there were no flags to warn of increased bacteria. There were no people milling around the sidewalks that had seemed oddly far off. It had been just the two of them under the clear night sky.
Zenha sighed hitting the snooze on her alarm. Wentworth was still in Dallas, just as he had been for the past several months. She hadn’t heard from him in almost a week and it’d been over a month since she’d seen him. She was beginning to have trouble remembering how he smelled and how her hand fit into his. She allowed herself just a moment more with him before preparing herself for the day ahead.
Zenha’s eyes finally opened as she stared at the ceiling. She was confused as she remembered she had stayed up late last night finishing her work. She had planned on sleeping in today. She rolled over to look at the clock, but before the numbers registered she saw something red fall off of her navy comforter. Looking down she saw a myriad of red and white rose petals littering the floor. She sat up and noticed that not only did they cover her floor and bed, but they led out the open door she always closed at night. As she looked around Zenha saw a single white rose next to where her head had been laying. Picking it up, she read the attached paper: Laid out before you is the path of my heart. W
Zenha sat stunned for a moment as coherency escaped her. Slowly one thought became clear. He was here. Wentworth was back. She jumped from the bed nearly clearing it of the petals and ran to her closet. She couldn’t be wearing her pajamas for his return; he deserved so much more. She quickly pulled on jeans and a shirt before sweeping the front half of her hair into a ponytail. She checked her reflection in the small mirror next the door before taking a deep breathe and following the delicate path out of her room.
The rose petals created a unique sensation on the bottom of Zenha’s bare feet. She hardly felt it though as excitement began to knot in her stomach. The path led to the sliding door where a pair of sneakers sat. She pulled them on and followed the petals to a familiar opening in the trees. She continued upon her normal trail that had been transformed with color.
Excitement continued to build as her mind cleared and the real mystery set in. Where was he taking her? The path only came out to a parking lot. A loud crunch interrupted her thoughts and, looking down, she noticed the petals no longer followed the path. She stepped off the path back onto the petal without hesitation and she felt a bit like Red-Riding Hood.
Although the number of rose petals had not decreased, they became more difficult to see through the thick brush. Slowly the red petals disappeared and the trail became pure white. Finally the path opened into a small clearing where the pure path led to a pool of red petals. Her breath caught in her throat when a sparkle glinted from the midst of the red.
Zenha stood frozen to the spot. Had he really done all of this just for her? Where was he? As if in answer to her question, Wentworth appeared from behind her, took her hand in his and led her over to the red rose petals. Without letting go of her hand he circled in front of her and dropped to one knee. An “oh my God” escaped Zenha’s mouth as Wentworth picked up the ring.
“Zenha, you have taken control of my heart since the very first day I saw you. Not a day has gone by in the past eight years that I haven’t thought of you. You fill me up so completely that I forget that I need other things to live, things like food, water, and sleep. During those years when you wouldn’t have anything to do with me, I was sure that the world had lost all meaning. Slowly, I made myself believe that things were getting better that I was happy without you. It wasn’t true though; you haunted my dreams and were in the background of everything I did. It was a bearable life, until that day I found you again, right here. It was that day that I knew I couldn’t go on as I had. My life was a sham and I needed you in it to make it real again. You were the good that made it worth putting up with the bad. Now, I’ve had this ring for seven and a half years, but I’ve never had the nerve to…Being away from you while filming these past months, even knowing you were here waiting for me, made me realize that I never want to be apart from you again. Z, Zenha, will you marry me?”
The tears that had begun to gather in his eyes at the very beginning of his speech now spilled over and Zenha couldn’t bring herself to wipe them away. She opened her mouth to answer, but it took a couple of tries before sound to actually come out. “I know that I don’t deserve someone as wonderful as you, but if you want me, I’m yours.”
Wentworth took the ring and placed it on her left ring finger. Then he stood and wiped away her tears. “I love you Z and that will never, ever change.”
