and
i
dove
under
a
desk

duck
and
cover

and
she
slid
under
the
desk
in
front
of
me
and
she
turned
her
head
and
our
eyes
met
as
bullets
sent
our
classmates
sprawling
on
the
floor
and
then
it
was
quiet
except
for
someone
muttering
It’s
Okay
It’s
Going
To
Be
Okay
They
Will
Be
Here
Soon
and
the
air
turned
sticky
with
the
blood
of
the
dead
and
the
dying
and
we
kept
staring
at
each
other
because
we
didn’t
know
what
else
to
do
and
even
though
i
wanted
to
close
my
eyes
i
couldn’t
because
i
depended
on
this
girl

knowing
someone
was
alive

and
i
didn’t
know
her
name
but
she
never
cried
once
even
when
he
came
back
with
his
hatred
and
with
every
bleeding
bullet
i
thought
This
One
Is
For
Me
but
her
eyes
said
No
and
i
am
glad
i
didn’t
look
away
because
i
could
see
my
future
in
her
stare.
