My New Life in Riverdale: Chapter One
I was starting high school in a brand new town, and I was nervous. Awaiting me in this new and seemingly mysterious town called Riverdale were new friends, new boys, new enemies, and so much more. It was my first day at Riverdale High.
I drove to school and parked in my new space in the junior parking lot. When I stepped out of my car, holding my book bag and purse, I looked up the sidewalk and up to the school. The building itself wasn’t that intimidating, it just looked like an ordinary high school, but the second I looked around at all of the people, I lost all confidence. I took a deep breath and started my journey up the sidewalk, gazing down at the cement underneath my feet to avoid all the stares directed at the new girl. Unfortunately, I was staring so hard at the sidewalk that I didn’t pay attention to where I was going, and before I new it I was on the ground after accidentally bumping into someone.
“Hey! Watch where you’re going, freak!” I heard a girl’s voice squeal at me as I scrambled to gather myself up off of the ground.
“Sorry!” I mumbled, standing up and regaining my composure.
“You should be!” The blonde girl I ran into said in a very high voice. I noticed she was wearing a cheerleading outfit, and was surrounded by a group of other cheerleaders and a few jock-looking guys too. And that’s when I saw him, the guy with the gorgeous brown eyes, shaggy brown hair, earring, and adorable face; with his arm around the blonde cheerleader.
“Are you okay?” He asked me.
“Oh, yeah, thanks, sorry about that.” I said, looking at him. Then I realized I had to get to the office to find out my schedule, so I backed out of the group of popular students and headed up the rest of the sidewalk to one of the entrances to the school. As I was walking up I heard,
“What a freak! She really needs to get her eyes checked!” That was the blonde cheerleader.
“Chill, baby, it was an accident, I think she’s new so give her a break!” That was the amazing looking brown-haired boy.
After a few minutes of roaming around the school, I found a sign in front of a big door that said, ‘OFFICE.’ I entered it, and went up to the counter where a secretary was typing on her computer.
“Can I help you?” She said in a monotonous tone.
“Yes, I’m new and I need my schedule, please.” I said nervously.
“Name?”
“Lita Byer.” I said.
“Here.” She handed me a small piece of paper with my schedule on it. “You have second lunch, good luck.” She added in that same monotonous voice.
“Thank you.” I said and she nodded, going back to her typing.
I walked outside of the office and looked at my schedule. I had the same classes I had at my last school: History, Precalculus, Art 3, and Spanish 2, in that order. I was glad that I had at least moved to a school with the same block schedule I had at my old school. I went outside of the office and wandered around the school trying to find North Hall American History class N12.
Eventually, I found this North Hall American History class, introduced myself to the teacher (thank goodness she didn’t introduce me to the class, I hate being the center of attention!), got a textbook, and she told me to sit wherever I wanted because there were no assigned seats. I found a seat near the back corner of the classroom and pulled out a notebook so that I could copy down the notes that were on the bored. I jumped when I heard a voice next to me.
“Ya know, next time you’re gonna run into someone I wouldn’t recommend the particular girl you ran into.”
I turned to see that same brown-haired guy sitting next to me smiling.
“Oh, right, because it was my choice to be knocked on my butt in front of the entire school.” I said sarcastically.
“Okay,” He said raising his hands as if in defeat, but still smiling. “I was just joking.”
“Right, sorry.” I said and he laughed.
“I’m Jake.”
“Lita.” I said.
“Hi Lita!” He said cheerfully, which made me laugh. “Seriously, though, try to avoid Courtney, the girl who you bumped into, because, and don’t tell her I said this, but she’s scary on the warpath.”
I nodded and smiled, “Thanks, I’ll do that.”
“So what classes are you in?” He asked me.
“Oh, um this, obviously, pre-cal, art, and Spanish.” I said.
“Cool, lemme see your schedule, see if you’re in any of other of the same periods as I am. I have pre-cal and Spanish also.” He said as he smiled and held out his hand. I handed him my schedule. “You’re in my pre-cal class next period, I’ll show you where it’s at.”
“Thanks, it took me forever to find this class.” I said as the tardy bell rang.
“And you still managed to get here before half the rest of the class, amazing.” He laughed.
History went by pretty fast, as fast as a class that lasts an hour and a half can. That’s the only downside of block schedule, there are very long classes. The bell rang to go to second period and I gathered my stuff up and headed out of the classroom with Jake. We started walking through the hall toward the pre-cal class.
“Yo, Carter, wait up!” Jake spun around to greet a guy that was calling him by his last name.
“Hey!” He said and turned me around with him to meet the kid. “This is the lovely Lita”
“Byer.” I confirmed my last name.
“This is the lovely Lita Byer.” He said smiling. “And that idiot there is Chris Johnson.”
“Hey Lita.” Chris said smiling at me and then giving the evil eye at Jake. He was tall with short blonde hair and blue eyes, the typical pretty boy. Although I won’t deny that he was hot.
“Hey.” I responded.
“So Jake, are you goin’ to that party on Friday?” Chris asked Jake and Jake looked around as if in thought. “Or is your master forcing you to go out with her?”
“Shut up man.” Jake responded at the laughing Chris.
“Alright, whatever, I gotta go get to class.”
“Wow, one sentence I’d never think I’d hear from you!” Jake laughed as Chris walked away. “So we better hurry up and get to class too before the bell rings.”
“Yeah, so which way?”
“Right over this way.” We entered the pre-cal class and unfortunately I was introduced in front of the class, and then was assigned to sit next to Jake for him to show me what we were doing.
“If you wanna meet at lunch, I’d be happy to give you the notes from this and history.” He told me at the end of math class.
“Okay, where do you wanna meet?” I asked him.
“Just go to the cafeteria and I’ll meet you there, I always do the rounds at most of the tables anyway, so I’ll find you.” He said at the end of math class.
“Okay, thanks.” I nodded. “So do you know where A3 is?”
“Oh, I actually have to stop by there anyway, so I’ll walk you to it.” He told me as he led me to my art class. When we arrived at class, I realized the reason why Jake had to stop by my art class: the blonde cheerleader Courtney, who I had assumed by now was Jake’s girlfriend, was standing outside the door. And when she saw me walking with her boyfriend, she was glaring at me.
