Title: And there was Light
Rating: T
Genre(s): Romance/Supernatural
Summary: Once upon a midnight detour, Light encountered a Demon. She ran. He let her. She tried to forget. He watched her. She recovered. He decided he was tired of waiting.
A/N: Wow, just wow. I really didn’t expect to receive six reviews for the prologue. You guys are amazing. Absolutely amazing, I can’t describe how stoked I am. So to show my appreciation, I decided to dedicate this chapter to you guys.
“Goodbye Miss!” The children of Light’s class chorused as they left the school grounds to be joined by their parents.
“Bye guys, see you all on Monday.” Light replied laughingly as the children exited.
One by one, the children disappeared off to their happy homes with their loving parents. Sometimes Light missed the times when she was the one saying goodbye to the teacher and going home to a delicious afternoon snack.
Soon all the children had exited the school grounds except for one little girl. Light knew that as a teacher, she wasn’t supposed to play favourites, but honestly, it was quite impossible when some children were just so much more likeable than others.
This little girl; who went by the name of Lacey, was a real sweetheart. She was never any trouble, nor did she ever have a mean word to say to anyone. Light had a feeling that she would have boys up to her neck when she entered high school.
Lacey approached her a little hesitantly and Light smiled kindly to make her feel more at ease. Smiling back timidly, Lacey approached with more confidence until she was looking up at her teacher.
“Miss, can I show you something?” Lacey asked shyly with her hands behind her back.
“Of course you can Lacey; you can show me anything you like.” Light told her, not knowing of anyone who could deny a child such a request.
Lacey pulled a beautiful blue flower out from behind her back. Its petals were slightly crinkled but the flower itself was nevertheless very pretty indeed.
“This is for you Miss, for being such a nice teacher.”
Light melted. How was she supposed to not play favourites when a child did something like that?
“Aw, sweetie, thankyou so much. I’ll press it into a book as soon as possible so I can keep it forever, ok?”
Light gave the little girl a warm hug.
“Now, you better get going before your mother gets worried.”
“Ok Miss, bye-bye!” Lacey chirped as she bounced off into the arms of her waiting mother.
Light watched fondly as they walked off, but her reverie was broken when a pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind. A masculine voice spoke teasingly into her ear.
“That was cute, but don’t I get a hug?”
Light let out a delighted shriek and spun around so quickly that it was a wonder that her neck didn’t snap, “Chris! What are you doing here? I haven’t seen you in ages. How are you?”
Chris chuckled, “Whoa whoa, one question at a time, I just got off the plane you know and I came straight to see you. I’m still a little bit jet lagged.”
“I missed you so much. How long are you staying here for?”
He grinned, “I’m thinking about hanging around here for a while. You know, just to bother you and all. Already got an apartment set up and everything.”
Light laughed happily, “That’s so great! How’d you get the apartment so quickly?”
“Ah I had a friend pull a few strings for me; it’s pretty decent too, kinda roomy, just how I like it.”
“So you lied to me then, you didn’t come straight to see me did you?” This was said accompanied by a raised eyebrow and a twinkling in the eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, so I didn’t come straight to you, but I was pretty close.”
“Gee, thanks, good to know that an apartment is more important to you than I am.”
Chris chuckled, “Yeah whatever. Look, I don’t really know the area well at all, so I was thinking maybe we could grab some ice cream or something and you can show me the sites?”
Light pretended to think about this for a while, “Well…I guess I could stomach your presence for a little while, as long as you’re paying for the ice cream.”
“Tch, still the same old little sis’ ain’t ya?”
Light rolled her eyes at him, "Just let me press the flower into a book like I promised and we'll go."
Light and her brother Chris sat at a nearby ice cream booth after having purchased two double scoop cones.
“So how have things been with you?” Chris asked as he enjoyed his double chocolate ice cream.
“Things have been good, I’m teaching at the primary school back there, but you already knew that, the students are really sweet.”
“Yeah, I saw the little girl, she seemed fond of you.”
“Yep, Lacey’s a sweetheart, if I ever have a daughter; I hope she’s like her.”
“How are your university courses going?”
Light made a face, “They’re taking up a lot of time, especially with my job and all, but other than that, they’ve been good.”
“Anything unusual or exciting happen to you?”
Briefly, Light was reminded of an incident six months ago, but she quickly shook it off. She had gotten over that.
Light smiled brightly, “No not really. What about you, I haven’t heard from you in ages, anything happen that I should know about?”
Chris chuckled, “No not really, just the usual, bumming around, switching jobs whenever I feel like it, the occasional one night sta-“
“Ok too much information. I don’t need to know anything about your sex life so just keep it to yourself.”
“Tch, really sis’, are you really still so innocent at your age?”
“Excuse me? At my age, what’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing, nothing! I just thought most girls were more experienced by the time they were twenty two.”
“Humph, well I know the sort of girls that you acquaint yourself with and I hardly think that they should be considered the standard that women should be compared too.”
Chris laughed, “I’ll have you know that I only date women with class…and cleavage, they gotta have some cleavage.”
Light snorted, “Yes, because intelligence, wit and personality are all horribly overrated in this day and age.”
“I didn’t say that they couldn’t have intelligence, I just said that cleavage was a must!”
“You’re a pig Christian, honestly.”
Chris laughed, “Yes well, you love me anyways.”
Light mock scowled, “Don’t remind me.”
Chris smiled warmly at her, “It’s really nice talking to you again sis’.”
She grinned, “Yeah it is, I've missed you so much.”
By this time, the siblings had finished their ice creams and were simply sitting in the booth, enjoying each other’s company.
“So, weren’t you going to show me some of the sites around here?”
“Oh right. Yeah, I’ve got the perfect place in mind.” Light smirked malevolently and Chris cringed.
“So err… where exactly are we going to be going?” This was asked with a fair amount of wariness.
Light’s grin only widened, “You’ll see once we get there.”
“Oh I didn’t, in fact, I was quite sure that you didn’t want to visit a mall at all, ever, but I felt like shopping, so here we are.”
“I still don’t understand why that fact has anything to do with me.”
“I need you to come with me. After all, those big strong arms of yours need to be used for something; I figured that something might as well be carrying my bags.”
Chris groaned and reluctantly entered the building, “Let’s just get this over with.”
Light jogged a little to catch up to her brother’s long stride, “Why are you all so against shopping?”
Chris raised an eyebrow, “Us all?”
“Yeah, you know, men, why are you all so against shopping?”
Her brother gawped at her incredulously, “You can’t be serious, you don’t know?”
Light shook her head, “Nope, why would I?”
“Honestly Light, can you think of a less masculine way to pass the time? Besides, not all of us hate shopping; we call the ones that don’t gay.”
“Oh so it’s a masculinity thing, I should have guessed, because really, all of your thought processes revolve around testosterone don’t they?”
Chris grinned, “Well, you’re just becoming this great big feminist aren’t you? Mum would be so proud.”
Light stuck out her tongue, “I’m no feminist; I’m just making a casual observation about the way men work.”
“Yep whatever you say sis’.”
“Oh be quiet you... Hey look! That’s a cute top, let’s go in.”
And thus, Chris’s work out regime began.
Some time later, found Chris with his arms laden with bags from various stores.
“Jeeze Light, how much do you want to buy? I don’t really know how you can afford all of this with your salary.” He groaned.
Light smiled cheerily, “Oh, I can’t afford it really. I just hadn’t been shopping in a long while so I needed some clothes. I usually don’t buy much at all; you just came on a bad day.”
Chris’s shoulders slumped in defeat, “Just... just go. Do you want anything else?”
Light looked at the bags and the surrounding area contemplatively, “Hmm, no it looks like I got everything.”
Chris began to sigh in relief, but Light’s gaze suddenly caught on a nearby store.
“A bookstore! How awesome, come on Chris, let’s go in.”
Chris wearily dragged himself after his sister who had made a beeline for the romance section of the little shop.
He came up behind her and commented, “Yeah, you’re not a typical girl at all. I mean, what kind of girl would ever read a romance novel? Oh wait, all of them.”
Light glared at him, “Just because I have a penchant for romance doesn’t mean I’m a stereotype, now take these, and these, and maybe these ones too, I’m going to go pay.”
Unfortunately, Chris’s arms decided that the books were too much and had decided to give way, causing them to tumble onto the ground.
Light rolled her eyes, “Gee big brother, it looks like you need to work out more,” she sighed, “Fine, I’ll just carry these ones for now then.”
Chris scoffed offendedly but followed her to the cashier diligently.
After they had paid for Light’s purchases, they headed out of the store with every intention of leaving.
They were delayed when a handsome young man bowled into Light and sent her sprawling to the floor with all her books scattering.
The man began apologising profusely and helped her gather up her fallen books. He handed them back to her and stood up, offering a hand to her to help her up.
“I’m really sorry about that, it was completely my fault, I should have been watching were I was going.”
Light blushed shyly, after all, the man was rather handsome and was currently peering earnestly into her eyes while apologising. She was about to take the proffered hand when she thought she heard a low growling sound.
She looked up curiously at the source of the sound and gasped in shock.
There, a short distance away, was a tall, dark haired man who, except for the slight tensing of his shoulders appeared to be leaning casually against a wall, glancing their way.
Red eyes
Light’s eyes widened, surely he couldn’t be… no that was impossible. She craned her neck to get a closer look at the dark haired man, but a crowd of people blocked her view, and when they had passed, he was gone.
‘How strange, I could have sworn… Maybe it was just my imagination.’
Jerked back to reality by a voice asking her if she was alright, she realised with a blush that the man that had knocked her over still had his hand offered to her and was standing with a concerned look on his face.
“Are you ok Miss? You don’t have a concussion do you?”
She smiled sheepishly, “No I’m fine, I must have zoned out for a minute there, sorry.”
She took his hand and allowed him to pull her onto her feet. Her brother approached and asked if she was alright and she gave him a similar reply and they continued to exit the mall.
But as they did so, Light couldn’t help but wonder: had she actually seen a man with red eyes?
She was taken out of her thoughts for the second time that day by another question from her brother.
She grinned apologetically, “Sorry, I wasn’t listening, what was it that you were saying?”
Her brother looked at her concernedly, “Are you sure you’re ok, you seem a little spaced out, maybe I should take you to a hospital or something.”
“No, no I’m fine; I’m just a little bit tired from all that shopping.”
“Well who wouldn’t be, you certainly did enough of it.”
“Oh shut up; just tell me what you said.”
“I was just wondering whether or not you’re free for dinner tomorrow.”
She furrowed her brow in thought, “Yeah I think so, why?”
“Awesome, why don’t you come over to my apartment for dinner? I want you to meet the friend that got the place for me, and you know I’m a great cook.”
That was true, if there was one thing her brother could do, it was cook.
“Alright, I’ll come, what time should I be there?”
“I dunno; say around… seven o’clock tomorrow evening?”
“Sure, see you then I guess. It was great seeing you again Chris.”
“Yeah, you too, bye sis.”
The next evening found Light rushing around her apartment to find something suitable to wear.
‘This is ridiculous, why should I care so much about how I look? It’s only my brother.’
With that thought firmly implanted in her head, she grabbed a pair of jeans and a nice shirt from her closet and put them on. With the matter of her clothes settled and a bottle of wine as a welcoming gift, she set off in the direction of her brother’s apartment, following the directions Chris had given her.
When she arrived at the apartment complex, she was assured that her brother wasn’t living in a shambles and didn’t need her to find him a new apartment.
The lobby of the apartment complex was quite large and furnished nicely, it didn’t have the cold impersonal feel that most had; instead, it had a rather warm atmosphere.
She took the elevator up to her brother’s floor, and stood outside the door to his apartment.
She took a deep breath, not really knowing why she was nervous, it was just her brother and his friend after all and knocked.
After a few seconds, the door swung open and she was greeted by the site of a familiar tall, muscular, dark haired man.
