A WISH

story version

The sun was setting overhead, giving the sky a red-orange hue. It was such a pretty sight, and it was a shame. She felt so miserable standing there, wishing for the ground to give way to her bleeding heart.

“Hey Yumi!” She immediately forced a smile on her pretty face, and turned just in time to see her best friend walking toward her. “Are you okay? You’ve been awfully quiet for a long time now...” He looked at her with uncertainty.

“Oh, don’t you worry about me. I was just admiring the view from up here.” She raised her arms and inhaled deeply to further get her point across.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. The view is amazing from here, and it just gives me so much joy that you could come today Mimi.” Using the nickname they had when they were kids gave Hiro a sense of the past.

His words stung Yumi a little, but she didn’t let it show on her face. Instead, she looked at the decorations hanging over the balcony, then at the profile of her best friend. He was perfect in her eyes. He had a well-sculpted face, eyes that glimmer when he laughs, soft lips that always curl up into a smile, the toned arms, and her list could just go on and on.

She had always been in love with him, she knew, but she had never found the courage to really say it, and now it was too late. He was getting married, and to a lovely girl at that. They looked perfect for each other, she couldn’t deny that. And that was what made her wounds hurt more.

Now her violet eyes were trying their best not to shed her tears now, not while the man she loves can see her vulnerability.

Changing the topic, she quipped, “Isn’t it about time yet, Hiro?” Her eyes look over at his, and he slowly meets her gaze. “Hmm, I don’t think so, but I’ll come down to check it out. Want to come with me?” A boyish grin spreads across his face, and she can’t help but smile back.

“No, I’m alright up here. I’ll just come down when it’s really about to start.” And with that, he slowly walks down the winding stairs, silently berating himself for not having told her how he really felt.

He had always loved her, but he was too scared to let her know how he felt, since it seemed that she didn’t feel the same way. So he stood by her, watching silently, furious with every guy who broke her heart, and wishing he could wipe away her tears as her lover, and not somebody she looks up to like a brother.

But now it was too late, he was going to be married to a girl he didn’t love, who was so perfect that she didn’t have any of the flaws that he loved about Yumi. A forced marriage it may be, though it was still he who had accepted his fate, he wonders now, what would have happened if he had just said those three little words. Three words that weigh so much, it seemed to be stuck in his heart, and it would remain there for all time.

Waking from her reverie, Yumi looked down and saw a car pull up the driveway. It was the bride’s car, and Mira stepped out, all smiles, the sinking sun accentuating her lovely features. Her tears started to fall, and she didn’t bother wiping them away. It would be the last time, she says to herself, the last time that she would cry for him. But in her heart, she knew that it wouldn’t be.

Stopping a few steps from the ground, Hiro feels the tears stain his cheek. He cries for all the things he’s about to lose with one single moment, the two words which could rip his heart apart. It would be the last time, he says, the last time that he would cry for her. But in his heart, he knew it wouldn’t be.

On that particular wedding day, two hearts had come to terms with their feelings. The only thing to be done was to find the courage to say it out loud. But then,

It was just a wish.
