Insecurity

by crystal tiara

Insecurity feeds on Worry like a drug, like it’s the only thing enough to keep her alive. She has no identity; instead, what fuels her existence is the need to compare herself to others. Only then does she take on an identity; only then does she become who we recognize as Insecurity. Trying hard to be a shape-shifter, Insecurity yearns to be like someone else – no, to be someone else, but she will never me. All she can do is to stand eclipsed in others’ shadows, hiding but at the same time embracing the darkness. Inseparable with her good friend Envy, Insecurity breathes in the good she sees in others, hoping that by doing so she will become whoever, or whatever, she wants to be. She thinks that swallowing others’ traits will mold her into their likeness, but she can’t even digest them. All she can do is stare at others, sighing and wishing, for Insecurity is blind to herself.

Author’s Notes: At 161 words, my drabble resulted from yet another activity from Gabriele Rico’s book, “Writing the Natural Way”, in which one is asked to personify a quality. As always, constructive criticism is highly appreciated.
