Pledge

i pledge my allegiance
to a woman who art thou
first discovered her womanhood
and then discovered how
to frame her life
and to frame it well
making the picture on the inside
not look like the reality of her own hell
making the floor not crack
of her ocean floor shell
and making her insides
not carry that ready-to-push smell

and trust this one thing
coming from a man
that came from a womb
that came from a woman
who almost died that day
that i must clarify this statement
in that i'll only take up two minutes
of your time to say
what i have to say

first of all, i was a catch
yes one in one million
though i may be a statistic
it doesn't make me brilliant
she sure wasn't conscious
and i came from her at night
though the atmosphere was dark
i came in through some kind of light

and though that light of some kind
was swinging side to side
making me want to burrow back into her stomach
making me want to curl up and hide
and even though she knew of nothing
when all she could do
was try and try and try
i only felt underneath me the love
and above me only sky

and above me only sky..sky..sky

and in front of me
only time
when i want to thank her for her life
and even more so, for mine
