Spring Has Sprung
Grey day after long, dreary, grey day
Came and lingered and slunk into
A hazy darkness not quite “twilight.”
Clouds were low, and constantly
Spilling on us, ducked and shivering as we were.
Once in a long while, a flighty scrap of blue
Dares to dart through the smother,
Only to be chased off by the brooding heavy,
Leaving us again in melancholy.
Chasing off in turn the blanket of misery,
Calling forth color back into the world.
Sap thawed, and blood beat again.
Now pale green, pink, deep red, brilliant
Jewels of flowers leap from the earth
Rejoicing with us at the new day.
Verdant grass makes soft beds
For new-born who find themselves
In each others’ arms.
Free of months of dark and wet,
We twirl into the sunshine with childish delight
And celebrate-
Spring has sprung.
