Where the Sand Meets the Water
Allie’s long blond hair swished lightly in the warm summer breeze as she stepped out from her car and into the setting sun. Her eyes shone with the joys of youth, and her skin absorbed the sun’s fading rays. She removed her beach towel and her bag from the trunk as Trey emerged from the car. He pushed his soft brown hair from his eyes and went to help Allie, who insisted that she didn’t need any assistance. He removed his own towel from the trunk and moved his dark sunglasses from his eyes to the top of his head.
“How am I supposed to be a good date if I don’t even carry your things?” he asked. Allie shrugged and walked off toward the board walk. Trey followed with a satisfied smile on his face. Allie padded softly up the steps to the long platform that led to the sandy shore with Trey right on her heels. She stopped to admire the view, the rolling waves crashing into the beach and the beach nobly resisting their blows over and over again. Allie’s pause gave Trey the opportunity to steal her things.
“Hey!” Allie called as she chased Trey toward the water. He tossed the items on the sand, but Allie continued to chase him across the shoreline, and he continued to run. He finally collapsed in the sand some distance from the place he had dumped her things. Allie collapsed on top of him, laying her head on his chest.
“I win,” Allie laughed as she rose to her feet.
“No way,” Trey replied. He scooped her up by her knees and slung her over his shoulder. Allie made a few movements of protest before resigning herself to her uncomfortable position.
“Put me down!” she giggled as he tickled her stomach.
“If you won’t let me carry your stuff, then you’ll have to let me carry you.” His muscular shoulders easily bore her weight as he carried her back to their spot. He finally set her down when they reached it.
“Now, I win,” he announced as he stood looking down at her.
“You and your ego,” Allie muttered as she jokingly brushed herself off.
“Excuse me? You were the one who wouldn’t let me carry your stuff, a simple act of courtesy that I am entitled to as a member of the male sex!”
“You aren’t entitled to anything,” Allie reminded him as he sat down beside her and put a strong arm around her shoulders.
“Sure I am, I’m entitled to all of your attention until this date has concluded,” he stated.
“I suppose I can give you that,” she sighed as she bumped him gently in the side.
“That’s big for you.”
“I know, so don’t push it.” Trey laughed and toyed with the idea of pulling her closer.
“How about a walk?” he suggested. She allowed him to help her to her feet as she agreed with a hearty nod. They walked a ways down the beach and Allie allowed Trey to hold her hand as they went.
“I have a confession to make,” Trey said suddenly and both stopped as the water’s edge, the cool water nipping at their ankles with the coming of each wave, “don’t say a word until I’m done, or I won’t be able to say it right.” Allie made the motion of locking her lips and throwing away the key.
“You are an amazing girl and all, and I never thought you’d go out with me, but I’m not sure this is right. You seem so stiff with me, even now. Other girls I’ve dated have been more, willing to let me touch them, they want to be caressed, and loved, and you just want to hang out all the time. I’ve tried to understand, but I think it’s been long enough.”
“Are you done?” Allie asked before continuing.
“Yah,” he replied.
“Okay. I see what you mean, but did I ever say I didn’t want you to love me? Did I ever say I didn’t want you to touch me? No. I’ve been waiting for you Trey. I know I changed last summer. The year before I was slightly overweight and not one of the prettiest girls by far. Now that I’m nicer to look at, you feel awkward treating me like the other girls, and that’s okay, it’s what I want. I love the respect I get from you, the respect you give me because before I was a woman to you, I was a person.”
Trey took this in for a moment, and Allie gave him a meaningful look.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked cautiously.
“Yes, and make it good, it’s my first one, and I’d hate to waste it.”
