Sonnet #8: Tears in a Jar
Count the tears that fall from your face so far.
Remember each one as if they were fresh.
Number them all and place them in a jar
And hand them to me, for ‘tis what I wish.
I’ll press the glass upon my trembling lips
And drink the lingering grief from your eyes
And I’ll peer into this bottomless pit
And taste the sad and tears and wails and cries.
Who can blame you for a dampened cheek
And your bloodshot eyes and a tampered health?
Who can blame you if you are growing weak
‘Cause if tears were money, you’d be in wealth?
I’d rather you put me through a living hell
Than take this anger out upon yourself.
