I woke one last time today

I woke one last time today

and kissed my last kiss.

I missed my last chance to dance

one last slow dance with you.

I walked with my last candle,

lit by the last match,

Out the last door on the left

into my last dark night.

I stepped down from the last stair,

turned for one last look,

took the last key off the chain

you gave to me last week.

I etched some last words quickly

to leave a lasting mark

the last line read, in cobalt bold

“At least I loved you last”

Tonight, at last, I hang here

hearing the last dove coo,

Bearing the last weight I can bear.

I saved my mass for last.

My heart yearns for one last breath

To dream of one last scene,

of the last time my toes touched

their last blade of green.
