This chapter I'm sorry to say is just kind of a setup for the next one. Today I'm on somewhat of a goal to write one chapter for each story I'm writing...which is going to take me an entire day. My computer has been down for almost three weeks and I haven't been able to update ANYTHING! Or get on a computer for that matter. Review if you'd like to see this story continue.
“Would you come with me please?” They followed the historian up the stairs and into a small room with only one window. The man sat behind a desk and motioned for the two to sit across from him in two wooden chairs. He leaned back in his leather chair still looking at the picture. For a while they sat in an eerie silence, only hearing the pouring rain outside. The man turned on his desk lamp giving the room a less gloomy feel before speaking.

“Cain. They were a clan originally from Early Ireland. They bought Castle Campbell for only a short period of time. We believe it was to flee from Ireland and try to “start over.”

“Start over?” Colton asked resting his elbows on his knees while leaning forward. He was eager to hear more. Finally someone knew whom he was trying to find.

“The Cain family had the insignia of a two-headed snake with an hourglass. They were a family that was believed to delve in witchcraft. Their way of belief was that one day they would find a way to become immortal. They too fled the castle after the fire, not caring to put it out.”

“Do you think that the fire could have been the outcome of them practicing witchcraft?” Jay asked. ‘Took him long enough to get interested.’ Colton thought smiling over at his friend.

“Very. But it is unsure of. Just another one of Scotland’s mysteries.”

“Do you know this man’s name?” Colton asked eagerly. The historian sighed before shaking his head. The pale boy sunk back in his chair and sulked momentarily.

“But I have a friend who may know. She lives in Dublin, Ireland though.”

“Thanks, but we’re only college kids. We don’t have that kind of money to go on a wild goose chase. Thank you for your time. Come on Colton.” Jay tried to pull the smaller of the two away but Colton resisted him. He shook his grasp off his arm and looked back at the man.

“Can you give me an address?” The man smiled and wrote the address down.

“If you find anything else out, I’d like to know. My name by the way is William Ackart. I’ve also left a telephone number on this paper. It’s my business phone so if I don’t answer please do leave a message.” He handed the paper to Colton and the raven-haired boy nodded. They shook hands before departing.

“Dude! Do you realize what you’re doing? You’re going to blow all your money on-”

“Come on Jay! I’m tired of listening to your complaining! If I figure out who this guy is do you realize that I can have my name written in history books! A family of witches! If I learn about this guy and figure out all there is to know about him! I can become recognized in Scotland and now Ireland’s Historical Societies! And maybe globally recognized!”

“Do what you want man, but I’m out.” Colton blinked for a few moments before finding the words to say.

“…What?”

“I’m tired of always being dragged around by you. I just want to complete our work here and go back to New York. That’s all I want to do.”

“But you’re my best friend. I need you. We can have so much fun with all this, and you can get credited too!”

“It’s not about having my name written in books or being famous in the Historical Society, I’m not going to watch your downfall. I think this is just too much for you.”

“So you’re saying that you aren’t even going to be there to support me?”

“Man, I’m saying I don’t want to watch you fail. When you fail, you become someone completely different. You get depressed, you stop eating, you hurt yourself…last time I saw you cut yourself! You were crying and it was just a horrifying sight. Man just come on and lets go back to the hotel, finish our projects and go home.”

“No. I’m going to see this through. And you saw me cut…?” Colton grabbed his left wrist remembering the memories.

“…Yeah. I didn’t want to say anything cause I thought at the time I was being the good friend, but now I’ve realized that I was wrong. Come on; let’s go back to the hotel. I’m soaked and you’re shivering.” Jay wrapped his arm around his friend trying to warm the smaller boy up. Colton felt a little embarrassed. Jay saw him cut. The only time he failed was on a history exam last semester. Colton was so torn up about it he actually spiraled into a depression, he even cut himself. Now he wished desperately he could just turn back time and forget about cutting…emo shit isn’t exactly something to be proud of.

Back at the hotel the two sat in silence. It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence…just silence. The rain was still pattering on the windows making Colton feel very sleepy. He had been staring at the picture for almost half an hour now. Jay was finishing up his essay on Castle Campbell. When he finished he looked up and saw his friend sleeping soundly.

“Yeah man, you just sleep. You’ve had way too much in one day. And maybe tomorrow I can convince you to give up on that picture.” Jay saw the picture was in Colton’s hand. He gently picked it up and looked good and hard at it. What made this man so captivating to Colton? Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Colton was the beholder. But something wasn’t right about the man. His smile was creepy, and his eyes were…inhuman. Maybe that’s why Colton liked him so much. because he was completely different from anyone.

“Man come on! You still haven’t even done your essay!” The morning went just the opposite of what Jay planned on. His original plan was to convince Colton to give up before he got hurt and move on. Instead Colton decided on going straight to Dublin the first chance he got, with or without Jay.

“I’ll do my essay on the boat,” Colton said as he packed a few shirts and jeans. Jay sighed leaning against the off-white wall. ‘I’m never going to be able to convince him otherwise. I guess I better be there for him when he finally does give up.’

“I’m going with you,” Jay finally stated throwing his arms up in defeat.

“Really? Oh thank you Jay! Dude we’re going to have so much fun! And if we get low on money we can do some odd jobs or something.” Jay watched his skinny friend skip about the room gathering up all his belongings. Check out was in twenty minutes. The darker-skinned man watched with heavy eyes as he looked upon his friend. He knew this obsession wasn’t going to end well. “Jay? Jay! Hello! Boobies!” Jay blinked looking at his friend straight in the eyes. Brown eyes locked with brown eyes. “I’m all finished.”

“Hurry! We’re going to miss the boat!” Colton took off running through the port losing his balance here and there as the docks were soaking wet from the on-pouring rain. It seemed like it would never stop raining here. Jay did his best to keep up with his friend but was astounded to find the tiny boy was an exceptionally fast runner. They made it to their boat with only minutes to spare.

“Dude…” Jay gasped for air. “You run faster than a cheetah.” The panting boys placed their luggage in compartments and found seats nearby to rest. “Essay?” Jay questioned. Colton sighed before getting back up and going to get his laptop.

Jay watched as the deep blue waters sloshed against the large ferry. He looked up into the sky and saw no birds. Not even any sea gulls. The gloomy day seemed to trudge on slowly. He felt his eyelids become heavy and sleep soon overcame him.

“Jay! I’m finished!” Colton announced proudly. He looked over at his sleeping friend and covered his mouth as to prevent him from saying anything else. The boy played with his lip rings before thinking of something else to do. The ferry was moving slowly and Colton was nearly crying he was so bored. Sleep finally seemed to be the only thing there was to do.

The raven-haired boy found himself back in Castle Campbell. He looked around for anyone and noticed that not a single person was around. The air was stale and dark. He wandered around until he came upon that door; that door that led him to the portraits.

Compelled by it once again Colton found himself walking through it once more. It was dark. No sign of light could be found. The young man strained his eyes as much as he could to see but found it useless.

My, you are interesting,” he heard someone say. The voice was sinister, yet passionate. Colton looked desperately, trying to find the voice’s owner. “You want to see me don’t you?” Colton nodded. His own voice had escaped him. “Well fear not little one. In due time, you will find me. And you will release me from my prison.”

“Colton, wake up! We’re here.” Colton blinked groggily out of his strange dream. That voice was so captivating. He wanted to hear more from it. He wanted to know whom it belonged to. “Dude! Get your butt up and let’s go!” Jay pulled the boy out of the chair and walked them over to get their belongings.

They walked out onto the gray docks. At least it wasn’t raining here. The sky was still the same shade of gloomy gray. The two walked to an information center not far off and asked for directions to the Historical Society. As they walked Colton’s mind wandered far off. That voice had grabbed him and wrapped its cold yet loving hands around his neck. It was the most soothing sound he had ever heard, but at the same time he was terrified to ever hear it again.

“Dude you’re about to walk out into traffic,” Jay said grabbing the pale boy’s hand. “You okay?”

“Yeah, just on the boat I had a funny dream.”

“Funny as in something that is bothering you?”

“Yeah.”

Jay sighed, “Well we’re here. I want to get this over with as quickly as possible.”

“We aren’t going to find all the answers here Jay. Most likely this is just going to give us a small clue and then we’ll be sent off to somewhere else.”

“And what if that somewhere else is Antarctica? You gonna go there too?”

“If it will lead me closer to him.”

“Ah man! Listen to what you’re saying dude! You’re gonna kill yourself.”

“I just want to know more, is that such a crime?”

“No, but leading yourself to suicide and me letting you do it is!”

“We’ll talk about this later. Right now I want more answerers.” The two walked into the surprisingly beautiful building. Paintings adorned the creamy yellow walls as golden light shined brightly from the elaborate ceiling lamps. The atmosphere here was much more lifting than it had been in Scotland. A young woman was at the front desk typing away on her computer.

“Ma’am, is there any way we can see one of the historians here? Preferably this one.” Colton held out the card with the name and address written on it.

“I don’t see why not. Let me call Ms. O’Leary and see if she’s available.” The secretary called the woman up and had a quick conversation with her. “She’ll come out to see ya in a few minutes,” the woman said in her accent. Colton and Jay made themselves comfortable on a couch and looked at the people coming and going. Fifteen minutes later, a woman with long platinum-blonde hair came into the waiting room wearing a simple black dress. She was young and her face was shaped not absolutely gorgeous, but cute and pretty. Jay’s eyes widened as he looked at the woman.

“Please say that’s Ms. O’Leary.”

“Are you Colton and Jay?” She asked brightly. Her accent wasn’t Irish it was English.

“Yes we are! And may I say you look absolutely nothing like what I had pictured.”

“Thought I was a little old lady? I just recently got a job here. I’ve got a few more years until I turn into your typical historian.” She motioned them to follow her to her office. Colton playfully closed Jay’s gaping mouth before giggling at his friend’s behavior. Maybe he wouldn’t be complaining so much anymore.

If I get at least two reviews I'll have more of this one before the week is over. I'm going on vacation this weekend from Friday to Sunday and no stories will be updated then. I'm aware this wasn't an exciting chapter but that is because it's a setup of the next chapter. And I'm also trying to not make this story go too quickly or it will lose its suspence factor. Review please
