Chapter One: A Normal Life

“You’ll never take me, Queen Allison,” Kobe snarled dramatically to his drama partner, Allison. They were practicing their parts in the local theaters monthly play.

“It is your fate, you must come, or you shall die,” She hissed back. The both burst out laughing at one another. Kobe caught his breath and rested his arms on the coffee table he was sitting by.

“I shall not, even if it is the last thing I decide,” Kobe whispered hoarsely and stood up, raising his fake sword threateningly.

“Then I shall drag thee to thy dark fate,” She hissed and rose as well. She lifted her staff toward him. They circled each other in Allison’s living room. Kobe lunged at her playfully and gasped as she dodged and playfully struck him on the back. He fell to the ground and roared dramatically, pretending to be in pain.

Then they both burst out laughing as Allison’s mother, Mary, came into the living room.

“Oh, you children. Teenagers, same thing. Kobe, your mother is out front waiting for you and there’s a Cola on the counter for you,” Mary said as she walked through the room and headed toward her bedroom, which was down the hall.

“Oh, okay,” Kobe said and got up, grabbing his fake sword and script. He stood still and watched Allison as she walked over to him and wrapped him in a gentle hug. He hugged back and looked down at her.

“I don’t want you to leave. I wish you could stay,” She said softly with a sad expression on her face.

“I know, baby. But I’m 17 and mom said now that we have the money, I can get a car that she won’t drive around all the time. So I can see you whenever I want. Or whenever you want But I have to go for now,” Kobe said and with that he kissed her gently, gave her a last hug, and walked away. He grabbed his pop on the way to the door.

Closing the door behind him, he walked down the drive and opened the door to his mom’s SUV and hopped in. After he closed the door and buckled his seatbelt, his mom started backing out of the driveway.
