Were you here?

Were you here?

Did you stand in this place,

Where I am standing now.

-

And were you cold?

When you got off the train.

Was it raining and dark

Or sharp daylight cutting your eyes.

Did you blink in the sudden sun?

Or stumble in the icy black?

-

When you looked up could you see stars?

Or was it just grey and blank.

Was this place always forever of nothing

Was this the end of your world?

-

Around me is your everything,

For how long?

Minutes, days, months.

But maybe you have finally escaped.

-

I can’t see you.

Or anyone else.

I can’t see anything but nothing

And all I feel inside is frozen.

-

The eye of my mind

Is straining to see you.

You

And the innumerable others.

But you are not walking on these train tracks

Or sleeping on that bunk.

-

Our flickering candle is burning for you,

For forgiveness or mercy or freedom.

We are tiny in this vastness,

Insignificant.

But we stare at it anyway,

For you and the others.

-

Were you here?

Everything that is you, or me, or anyone

Was never alive here.
