Candyfloss

You’re like candyfloss

On an unforgiving summer day.

Sprawled in the shade,

Candyfloss on my tongue,

For a sweet, insubstantial second.

-

You’re like rain

Sliding down my window

And washing the day away.

Turn my face to watch the sky,

Everything is new again.

-

You’re like midnight

Moving fluidly in the silence

Of secrets.

An ocean of darkness around me,

The stars are hiding.

-

You’re like winter

Cutting jagged edges in me

So I won’t forget.

Bow my head against the icy wind,

I can’t feel my heart.

-

You’re like no-one and nothing

Standing beside me

A million miles away.

Put my hand in yours just once,

My fingers close around yearning.
