Out Of Place

Chapter 1

The Only Person Hey! This is my big fic, so I hope you all enjoy this. It takes place in feudal Japan; so don’t mind all the words that aren’t in English, such as names and what not. I’ll try to keep it as clear as possible, but if you have trouble just met me know. : ) J-E dictionary at bottom.

There will be some slash in this fic, so you have been warned. No flames for lesbians flame me for other crap.

Main Characters: Nomi Hitori, Kurashi Hinna

Pairing: Nomi Hitori, Kurashi Hinna

Setting: Feudal Japan

Rating: teen, cuz there will be no sex scene.

So, I guess I’ll begin it now!

OKAY!

Brother?”

Hitori walked silently through the halls of the old building. She couldn’t find her brother anywhere and she was starting to grow nervous.

Maybe someone found him.

She swallowed hard and called out to him again. Still no answer. But she knew he wouldn’t be so careless as to get caught, not after all the trouble they’d gone through to get away.

Brother please answer me!” she cried again, but this time, she could hear something respond. It might have been her brother so she pushed her way through the darkness to him.

Brushing past the sheer blanket that covered the entryway, she glanced around.

She could see the fire burning from the nearest village, and she wished desperately that they weren’t outcast and they could stay in an inn. The hut was cold and smelled funny. She hated it.

But her brother had said so. And that’s all that mattered.

Her thoughts were shattered by a scream.

It was from the village. He’d told her many times that she should never, under any circumstance, go into a village without him. But for Christ’s sake, she was almost seventeen; she was that same little girl anymore.

So she dashed through the door, not even bothering to slip on her shoes.

The village laid in-between two large hill she circled it. Bad luck for her considering that all it did was cause her to fall about three times on her way down. But once there she continued, completely ignoring the cut she’d gotten on her second tumble.

Brother!?” she called. This must be where he’d gone. To help them, even though they turned them away, because her brother was a great guy, even if she was the only one that saw it.

A loud crash sounded from somewhere near her left and she took off. She could sense her brother nearby; he had to be over here.

One of the huts busted into flames and she stared at it. Fire was one of his…

Brother!?” she ran from the heat, surely her brother wouldn’t have done that. Maybe it was another demon. It had to be…

There were bodies scattered everywhere, blood splattered on buildings and the scent of fear and death hung heavy in the air. Somewhere, a child was crying.

Brot-”

She slowed to a stop and looked straight ahead of her. There he was. Her brother stood in the middle of the village, his left hand clasped tightly to the neck of an older male and his face mere inches away.

Brother…?” she asked quietly, her voice no more then a whisper. Sensing her, he looked up. Their eyes locked, but his were different. They were cold. She’d only seen that look once before…

Brother? What are you…what happened?” she couldn’t move, she was pretty much frozen in place.

Her brother let the man fall to the ground and he started walking towards her, stepping over a body on the way, like there was absolutely nothing out of place here.

Nomi, I told you to never come into a village without me…” his voice was low and angry. He was really mad. He was never mad at her.

I-I couldn’t find you…I was worried…I’m sorry…”

He placed his hands on her shoulders, roughly. It hurt…

Itai, Nii-san…” she looked up at him through glassy violet eyes, he seemed unabashed at his sisters pain.

You didn’t listen Nomi…” he breathed, then he leaned down and whispered in her ear.

Baka…”

Her eyes widened. Stupid? Why would he say that?

I-I don’t understand…” she stammered.

You never did…”

He lifted his left arm away from her and brought it down, hard, striking her on the side of her face. She cried out and fell to the ground. Cupping her cheek, she looked up at him.

B-brother…” she whimpered, her voice breaking as a tear inched its way down her face.

He raised his hand again, she saw the metal flash only momentarily and she screamed.

BROTHER!!”

A sharp pain…

Her voice failed her…

And then darkness…

...xxx...

“BROTHER!!” She flew forward, grasping at her chest as she could feel the metal of his blade making contact with her skin. It was sore and it hurt really bad. It took her a moment to realize that it was bandaged. Another moment and she took in her surroundings.

She was inside and it wasn’t one of the dinky little huts that her and her brother normally stayed in. It was really nice. Old, but still nice.

Then where was he?

Her fingers rested on her throat and she stroked the soft binding that covered it.

The wound was real, but surely it wasn’t inflicted by her brother…he would never do something like that. Maybe she was hurt during battle and it was just a dream…yeah that had to be it. Just wait till he hears about this.

She sat up fully and glanced around again. She still didn’t know where he was though and that always worried her, he never left without telling her and he would never leave her if she was hurt. Something had to be wrong…

“Not again…” she whispered to herself, attempting to push herself up but a sharp pain shot through her body and she collapsed back onto the bedding.

Raising her hand, she pressed her palm to her forehead and sighed. Losing her eyes, she lay silent and tried to sense her brother.

Nothing…

A faint aura made it’s presence known and she opened her eyes just as a young girl pushed back the drapery across the door and poked her head through.

Seeing Hitori, she smiled brightly.

“Oh you’re awake.” she said, coming into the room completely. She had a basin of water balanced against her hip and her kimono had a small water stain on it. Nomi said nothing and looked away, the girls smiled faltered, but she refused to let it disappear completely. Walking t o Hitori’s side, she set the basin down and sat herself. Folding her legs up under her in an elegant manner, though, with the awkward way she did it, one could assume it was a taught action, one that she wasn’t accustomed to.

“Daijoubu?” she asked, picking up the washcloth in the basin and wringing it out. Nomi still didn’t respond. The girl seemed unaffected by her rude nature.

“Well, we found you in one of the nearby villages, you’re the only survivor…” she said silently. Lifting the cloth, she placed it on Nomi’s forehead. Normally she would have asked for permission first, but she had no doubt in her mind that she wouldn’t have gotten a response if she had.

“My name’s Hinna By the way, Kurashi Hinna. I was assigned to watch over you while you healed…”

Nomi looked at her, but still remained silent.

“Do you have a name?” she asked. Still nothing…

She sighed heavily and stood up. “Well, I guess I should go let Master know that you’ve awakened…”

“Nomi…Nomi Hitori…” Hinna turned back and looked at her, blinked a few times, and then smiled.

“Nice to meet you Nomi-san.” she said brightly. Nomi studied her.

Hinna had short golden brown hair and large green eyes that gave away everything. The girl was tiny, though Hitori assumed that she was somewhere near her age. And she was cute, that much was clear. Not just in looks, but she e seemed like she would have a cute little personality too. Like the kind of bouncy little twelve-year-old personality that would really get on some peoples nerves if you weren’t able to handle it.

Nomi wasn’t one of those who could…

She herself had really long pitch-black hair that covered half of her face and piercing violet eyes that could stop you dead in your tracks if you let them. She looked much older then seventeen, though she hated to admit it. Her skin was pale and was offset by the black tattoo on the left side of her face a single slash mark with three tiny dots. It was the only sign of what she was, unlike her brother…

“So you have a brother do you?” Hinna asked, taking a seat next to Nomi once more. Her eyes widened and she sat up.

“Do you know where Kai is?” she asked quickly, an almost desperate tone. Hinna smiled weakly.

“I told you, you were the only survivor…I’m sorry….I just heard you say his name a lot in your sleep…” she trailed off when she noticed the sad look in Nomi’s eyes.

Nomi held her breath. She knew that Kai wasn’t dead, but then…did that mean it hadn’t been a dream? Had Kai really killed all those people? And then tried to kill her?

She couldn’t believe that…he had no reason…he wouldn’t do that…something had to have happened to him…

She lay down and closed her eyes, fighting off the tears that stung at her eyes. She refused to cry in front of this girl. She refused to cry at all…

You have no where to go now, do you?” Hinna asked, her voice almost inaudible. Nomi didn’t respond.

“I’m sorry…” she said, and then she stood and left the hut. Saying she really had to go tell Master that she had awoken.

Once alone, Nomi sighed…she was alone now…

...xxx...

Hinna rushed through the courtyard of the shrine and quickly made her way to the main temple where her master would be. She really didn’t need to run right over there, there was no need. But she couldn’t remain in the same room as her. It was over-whelming.

She practically burst through the shrine doors, when she did, Master looked up from her tapestry.

“What’s the rush Kurashi-Chan?” she asked, seemingly uncaring about the rude entrance.

“Um, Nomi has woken…” she stammered quickly and bowed low. Master raised and dark eyebrow.

“Nomi?”

“The girl we found, Master…her name is Nomi Hitori…”

“Nomi Hitori? What a sad name…does it suit her Hinna?”

“Well, I um, I’m not really sure…” Hinna said, lowering her eyes and staring at the floor near her sandals.

“Don’t lie to me Hinna…you’re an empath. I know you felt her…” she said wisely. Hinna bowed again.

“I’m sorry master. I just really don’t wanna assume something by first impression, she just found out that she’s the only survivor of her village, that could very well be the reason she’s sad…”

“I understand Kurashi-Chan…is that why you’re here?”

“Um yes Master…”

“You want her to stay here do you?”

Hinna blushed. “Y-yes Master…”

“You see yourself in her do you?”

“…” She didn’t say anything, she just closed her eyes.

“Very well. But explain to her as I did to you. No ones allowed to stay here for nothing; it’s unfair to the other girls. We’ll give her time to heal, but after that…”

“Yes Master…I’ll tell her…”

“You’re excused Kurashi-Chan…”

Hinna bowed once more and turned to leave.

“Oh and Kurashi?”

She looked back over her shoulder.

“Take the girl something to eat will you?”

“Of course Master.”

And she was gone…

Master stared after her, an amused smile on her face. That Hinna was a strange one…but by far one of her favorite students.

...xxx...

Nomi opened her eyes once more at the familiar aura of the young Hinna and she sighed. That girl would prove to be a nuisance…she could tell…

Hinna popped her head in once more and smiled at Hitori.

“Good afternoon, Hitori-san…I’ve brought you something to eat…I figured you’d be hungry after all, since you haven’t eaten in about four days.” she set the tray of food down, it consisted of rice and fish stew. It wasn’t much and it wasn’t fancy, but it was something that Nomi was used to and now that you mention it. She was hungry.

Sitting up, she accepted the food quietly, though she didn’t start eating it right away.

After a moment, Hinna spoke.

“Um, I talked to Master…and she said that, since you don’t have anywhere else to go. You’re aloud to stay here if you wish.” she began, her words fast like a ramble. Nomi blinked.

“This is uh, a shrine for young priestesses, and um, if you don’t mind pulling your weight, it’s a nice place…they took me in when I was orphaned, they’re pretty nice, and Master is really cool…and ah…” she could sense that Nomi was growing both confused and aggravated, so she let her voice trail off.

“Um, well, you don’t have to decide now…but you know…think about it at least…I’m going to go now…and let you get some sleep…Good night Hitori-san!” she said quickly and bee lined for the door.

Nomi watched after her for a moment and then back to her food. Four mushrooms made a smiley face on top of the rice…she found it…cute…

Sighing…she started to eat….

Well, that’s the first chapter! Hope you all enjoyed! If so, let me know in a little review…ya know…with that little button down there…its quite nifty…look…it’s winking at you…come on…click it…ya know ya want to…please…?

J-E dictionary;

Itai- that hurts; ouch; etc.

Daijoubu- (in this chapter, it has many meanings, but for this fic it will mean) are you okay; it’ll be all right; I am; that is.

Nii-san- Brother

Think that’s all of them…if I missed one let me know.

Oh and BTW Nomi Hitori mean Only Person, or some form of lonely…you’ll know later why I named her that.

Kurashi Hinna can be translated into ‘living bird’ which is the translation I used. And Kai means seashell or seashore…so his name would be Nomi Kai, which means, Single Sea Shell. It’s a very angst ridden family…what can I say?

Okay so Bai
