Chapter 5
Death on Ship
(Serena’s POV)
I looked at the boy outside as I passed, playing with his friends... I wished I could be his friend... a boy as a friend... if only I could meet one at my all girls school... just one guy...
I woke up drifting on a pile of wood... where am I? What was that dream about? I kicked my feet in the water hoping I’d see land...
“Do you need help?” asked a voice.
I looked up and saw the boy in my dream on a ship.
“Yeah, you think I’m here just because I want to be?” I grunt.
An arrow flies and barely misses my head.
“Grab that arrow and we’ll bring you up on the deck.” Said a lady beside the boy.
I grabbed the arrow and then it left the wood it was stuck on and went into the air while I was holding on to it. It gently lowered me onto the ship.
“What are you thinking? This person isn’t a guild member and might attack us at any time.” Said a guy in armor.
“It’s alright, she’s just a kid... she seems younger than all of us.” Said the boy. “My name is Selete... what’s yours?” the boy, Selete said.
“My name is... My name is... uh...” What’s my name? Serena... “I think it’s Serena...” I say quietly.
“You think?” asks the guy in armor. “She’s making up a name you see!”
“Dain, stay down... she might be suffering amnesia.” The girl said. She looked at me right into my eyes. “My name is Dawn.”
“By any chance, do you remember anything from the other world?” Selete asks.
“Other world?” I ask. “I don’t remember anything except... you... in the playground picking up some snow...”
“Me?”
“Lete-kun... she’s suffering amnesia... she must have gotten some of her memories from the reality.” Dawn said.
“Reality?” I ask.
“This world is rumored to be just an illusion and so far it seems to be true... most people seem to forget what happened in the other world... so only the ones with pure hearts remember.” Selete explains.
“Lete-kun here has a pure heart and he has made me remember the stuff in the reality.” Dawn said. “But I still remember the hardships I’ve been through in this fantasy... it’s completely altered my personality...”
“Yeah... I always thought you were too hyper.” Selete snorts.
“Anyways we’re currently in a job... we’re going to Shai town... it’s a town that only celebrates winter.”
“The missions to protect this castle for 5 days...” Selete grunts. “Lucky we’re ahead of schedule... I can use the extra 3 days to look for Rika...” he trots off around the ship.
A guy with a yellow bandana jumps onto it.
“If it isn’t mistress Dawn and her little friend!” said the man.
Selete turned toward him and jumped.
“Ty... I haven’t seen you for 2 days... let’s see if a newbie in magic can defeat an expert like you!” taunted Selete as he ran drawing his sword.
“Your wish Selete.” He grunted as he ran and drew his sword. They both slashed at each other and both swords collided. Wind flew everywhere, blowing in all directions and I flew right onto the wall. I grunted as pain started to fill my back.
“What?” Selete gasped.
“You’re not the only one who knows wind magic!” Ty shouted.
Ty jumped back and he made a strange stance... his sword was gripped tightly and was pointed at Selete while also moving backwards. Selete ran and jumped really really really high into the air and got ready for a powerful downward slash.
“A powerful move but easy to counter...” Ty sighed as he moved his sword in to stab but stopped it suddenly, fire starting at the tip of the sword, getting bigger. When Selete was an inch away to cutting his head off, the fire exploded. A giant dragon made out of fire flew out of the sword. It’s neck was the only thing flying out. It rammed it’s head right into Selete stomach. I stood and watched as he flew higher than he jumped, knocked out. An arrow flew toward Selete and it exploded when a net came and surrounded him. Selete was falling away from the ship.
“Dain, pull Lete-kun in with the rope, do it now so he wont drown!” Dawn ordered.
Dain stood up and ran toward where Selete’s direction. 10 more pirates boarded the ship.
“Dawn! More pirates!” I shouted.
She looked around to find out I was right.
“Lain! Come up here girl, we need some help!” Dawn shouted as she as she shot arrows, more pirates were coming jumping onto the ship.
“I saved Selete-kun!” shouted Dain.
“Take him toward the kitchen, protect Erika!”
“Roger!” Dain ran toward the only door on the ship and kicked it open, running in. A few moments later a ninja that was a lady, who I presumed was Lain, ran out. Dawn ran toward the door.
“Are you just gonna sit there Serena-chan? Move it!” Dawn shouted. I ran and looked behind me... more pirates were on the ship.
“We’re taking you back mistress Dawn.” Shouted the pirate, Ty.
“Serena, go look for Dain and Lete-kun, tell them to make all extra men without orders to go on deck and fight except for the person steering the ship. I also want Lete-kun, Erika and Dain in the captains room, ASAP, you hear?” Dawn said, her eyes not leaving the pirates as she raised her bow.
“Roger!” I said.
“Here!” she handed me a badge. “That way our men wont mistake you for the enemy, put it on your dress.”
My dress? I looked down to see I was in a blue dress. I noticed my hair was a little tight, it was a hair pin. I put the badge on my dress and ran. Where could they be? I found a man in blue with a sword holder on his belt.
“Dawn wants you on the deck. Before that though, take me to the kitchen, Dawn told me special orders for Selete-kun, Dain-san and... Erika-san.” I said.
“Alright, I’ll take you there right away!” the soldier said. He ran and I followed. He stopped at a door. “Here’s the kitchen.”
“Good, tell all the soldiers you can to get up on deck. Dawn wants all fighters except the captain, Selete and Dain on the deck ASAP.” I said.
“Right!” the soldier said as he ran.
I opened the door. Selete was awake now.
“Dawn wants us to go to the captains room.” I said.
“Ok... how many pirates are there now?” Dain asked.
“Last time I saw at least 20... Anyways, we need to get to the captains room!”
Selete stood up.
“We don’t know where that is... Dain here asked for directions just to get to the Kitchen, we only been on this ship for 5 hours before we found you.” Selete explained.
“Well we’re gonna have to find where it-” I started.
“I know where it is...” said a girl. I looked up to see a girl in a dress more fancier than mine. It was a sun dress, she also had a matching straw hat. “Follow.” She said.
We all followed Erika and we made it to this door. When we entered it, there was a lot of space around with a steering wheel in the hands of a man who I presumed was the captain. There was 1 door in the room besides where we were standing.
“Brook!” Selete said. “The ships being invaded!”
“Yeah, by guild Voyager. They don’t own any towns but they have a base far bigger than any others... we’re hovering over it now... it’s under the ocean.” Brook said. “The rep. isn’t so good and it’s always getting nastier... but they always get jobs since they always get it done.”
“Under the ocean... that’s one big base...” Selete groaned.
“Luckily Shai town is the closest town by Rastoolimus. Even when it’s over the ocean.” Brook said.
“How long till we get there?” Dain asked.
“5 hours at most... but with the pirates attacking...” Brook said.
“It’ll stall us... Brook, you maintain the ship. Keep it on course. I’m going to help clear the ship of pirates.” Selete said.
“Orders state that we stay here.” Dain said.
“Like I care, I gotta get out there!”
“You can’t Selete... we have to listen to Dawn’s orders.” Brook said... looking at a tin can.
“Does he know you’re not there?” I ask.
“Nope.” He replied.
I watched as the door opened. Pirates entered the room.
“Serena, Erika, go to where Brook is. Selete, attack the pirates!” Dain commanded.
I ran to where Brook was.
“Roger that!” Selete exclaimed as he went into position... I noticed... he didn’t have his sword.
“Selete, use your swo-” Dain started.
“It’s in the ocean!”
“Great... Selete, the other door is full of weapons, use your wind magic to open the door!” Brook said.
Selete turned to the other door in the room and moved his hand, the door opened magically. He then raised his hand and a sword case flew. Selete grabbed it and turned toward the pirates running at him. He withdrew his sword dropping the case before moving his hand and bringing another sword to his hand instantly. The case flew off and he made this position. He was trying to look cool. I watched as he slashed his swords toward the pirates. They blocked his swings with ease. One of them jumped and attempted an aerial attack. An aura surrounded Selete and the pirates flew back against the wall as Selete raised his swords and blocked the pirates swords between his. He clenched his swords tightly and the pirates sword broke in half. I watched as the pirate fell to the ground looking at his sword. Selete kicked the pirate onto the floor, stabbing his swords near the pirates head as he raised his hands and wind blew the other pirates toward the wall.
“What happened to them? What happened to Dawn!?” Selete shouted. Tears fell down his cheek... Dawn was trying to make them get passed the door... yet here they are... “ANSWER ME! WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BEST FRIEND!”
“Nothing, we didn’t kill mistress Dawn, we’re just convincing her to join our guild! Since you guys are losing, you can leave your guild and join ours!” the pirate said.
“Whose losing?” I said.
More pirates entered the room. I ran at them focusing energy into my palm. I hit a pirate in the chest with my palm. He flew away with 5 balls of wind flying at him, attacking his companions as well.
“Amazing...” I turn toward Selete and grin.
I focused energy on my hand and a rod came out.
“A mage? Mages don’t wear clothes like that...” Brook said. “Mages wear robes and a hat, not armor!”
“Stop looking at me.” Dain said in his full metal armor.
“This is only the 2nd mage I saw... and it’s in a dress!” Selete said. “Plus I never seen a mage look so kawaii. Red hair really suits you!”
I blush. He said I was kawaii...
“Thanks...” I said.
“You act all tough but you’re really just shy... heck throughout many of the fights you saw, you didn’t do anything until you put a lot of courage into it.” Selete said.
“Selete... control your wind magic... you just killed all the pirates and your using magic to hurt them when they are dead.” Dain said.
“Oh?” Selete said.
He dropped his arms and all the bodies fell to the ground. My eyes went wide. I looked as Selete fell backwards onto the ground shaking.
“I-I killed them...” he whispered.
I looked at him with my eyes wide.
