Chapter 1

“Take out your notebooks.”

Translation: Test.

"But Miss, today is children’s day." Desperation had united our class into one united voice of protest.

"And?"

Only to fail miserably.

"But Miss, we are not prepared." We whined.

If you fail once, try, try and try again.

"I know, which is why this is called a surprise test."

Only to retreat ingloriously before a superior authority.

"But Miss ..."

A desperate last stand.

"Kids, I hope you realize that you have wasted fifteen minutes of your stipulated forty five minutes test time arguing. That leaves you with only thirty minutes to complete your test."

Oh what a cruel and ruthless enemy!

Our ranks are falling apart.

"And remember, this accounts for twenty percent of your grades."

Ah, the masterstroke.

We capitulated.

With a lot of groans and impotent protests we dragged the notebooks out, steeling ourselves to face the inevitable.

What a horrendous end to a near perfect, almost test free day.

O woe is me!
