He fancied her and had to ask one morn,

What must I give to sit with you?’

All she could bring herself to yawn,

Was, ‘Why? Is you’re mate forlorn?’

-

He complimented her and had to ask one arvo’,

Wanna come with me to the movie?’

All she could bring herself to say though,

Was, ‘maybe, maybe no.’

-

He scared her and had to ask one eve,

Imagine us just you and me?!’

All she could bring herself to weave,

Was ‘No. Please. Just leave.’

-

He loved her and had to ask one day,

Why don’t you love me?’

All she could bring herself to say

Was, ‘Honey, love don’t work that way…”

-

He may still hope from day to day,

But love, love just don’t work that way.
