Foreword:
The Origin of Species
Humans: the origin of most of the other species. Most humans are mundane, completely lacking magic, although rarely, humans are born with strange powers, such as muted traces of magic, the ability to See, etc. For quite a long time, humans ruled the world through sheer numbers, but now their power has dwindled. The other species respect the humans, favoring them in treaties and allowing them to live on their land. The humans specialize in high technology and are led by many different people, because they have this strange habit of grouping themselves according to location.
Darklings: the seven most powerful humans in the world. They are psychics whose job it is to keep relative peace in the world. Their leader is Farrin James Oglesby, although they get their orders from an unknown source. They are respected by all species and rank higher than any others in the world.
Mages: were born from humans. Humans began to develop strange powers several thousand years ago, and these people passed on their traits until they had changed so much they were no longer quite human. While the mages are technically the closest species to humans, there are basic differences between them, most importantly the ability to use magic. Most mages learn magic from their parents or private tutors, although there are a few academies for those with great promise, most prominently the Royal Mage Academy, a part of the mage’s castle. The mages have long considered themselves superior to the other species, and only recently have they felt threatened by the vampires’ increase in power and wealth. The mages are led by King Ailill Morien Cicero and own parts of France and Britain.
Vampires: were created by a mage named Dracul whose greed for power led him to perform experiments on himself. He gained much strength and abilities, but he also developed many weaknesses, such as aversions to sunlight, garlic, and holy water. He created his children to help further his aims, bringing about the creation of the vampire families. Throughout the years vampires have evolved and most families no longer have the weaknesses that once plagued their kind. Vampire abilities are not standard—they vary by family. Half-vampires are scorned by most and are usually sold in the slave market to be used as blood dolls and servants, although this practice is slowly being outlawed. The vampires are led by King Densunus Aric Calloway and own parts of Britain and Eastern Europe.
Werewolves: were created by a mage named Lyca who planned a revolt against King Esper over a thousand years ago. He used many different spells and potions to change himself into a wolf one full moon night. He persisted in this until the monthly change became permanent and he was able to turn people into what he was by biting them. He quickly raised a large army, devastating much of King Esper’s forces and forcing him to retreat. He claimed much of Germany and Russia, where he built his kingdom. The werewolves are a militaristic people, and are widely regarded by the other species as barbarians. However, Queen Cassandra May Aisling, who was until recently a mere servant, has made great attempts to change this.
Demons: not the servants of hell—more like humanoid elementals. The ice demons live mostly in Greenland, Canada, and other cold places, although their king, Aisukyandi-sama, is from Japan and the capital is there. They have mostly white or pale blue hair and horizontal ears. Every ice demon is born with blue eyes, but as they spill blood (theirs or others’,) their eyes slowly turn red. An average adult civilian has lilac eyes, while soldiers often have red eyes. The oldest and most brutal demons’ eyes are nearly black.
Elves: live mostly in the forests of Germany, although due to deforestation many have been forced to move to the cities. They are rather secretive and the location of their government, and even the identity of their leader, is largely unknown. While they were once a warring people, for the past few hundred years they have remained neutral, perhaps due to their diminished numbers and resources. Only rogue elves cause conflicts with other nations in modern times.
Note: from a scientific standpoint, the humans and their offshoot species are all one species—that is, any of the two groups can produce fertile offspring. Go science. (Although this doesn’t happen too often because the different species don’t really like each other. Heh heh).
AN: This is just a note, but it’s rather important. Oh, and title suggestions would be really good, too. Yeah. Chapter one to be uploaded in a few minutes.
