--Prologue--
“Do you prefer rooftops or ceilings Theodore?”
“What’s the difference? They’re both the top parts of a building.” I replied, enthusiasm withheld.
“A ceiling is something that blocks you from the stars…whereas a roof top brings you closer to them.”
I despised Noah when he spoke like that.
It’s been three years since I attempted to come up here, but this is where the letter directed me. I’m a carelessly non-suspicious person, but also a foolishly curious one.
The rooftop of my apartment block is the limbo between the chaos of the city and the endless serenity of the fading summer sky. Stupid thoughts trickle through my mind as the soft March wind caresses my face, runs its dancing fingers through my neatly styled hair and picks up my tie to tease me further out onto the rooftop. Stupid insignificant thoughts like, ‘What was I wearing the last time I was here?’
I know the answer too.
It was in my last year of school and I was wearing my school uniform. I was eighteen then and even though I would have fought to death saying I wasn’t…I was spoilt and impressionable. I spent countless hours in detention, but was unopposed to two hours of sleep catch-up.
I remember the exact area of the roof we were standing on, on a night not too unlike this, but in December instead. It was an unusually windy December that year.
I knew that when I decided to finally come up here again, I would be walking up the half-lit staircase and into the past.
I think the letter writer knew that too.
After an hour of waiting I returned to my apartment, only to find a similar letter to the first stuck to the door:
Same time, same place
Next week.
I promise you.
Oh goody, one sided games.
I rip the letter off, scrunch it up and shove it in my pocket, trying to block out what was buried.
It’s too late now.
The door to the world of ‘what was’ has swung violently open, and now the memories are firing punches that I can’t dodge.
This may appear a little dull as it is just the prologue, but your opinions are greatly appreciated!
