6 Years later
“Thanks Deven, I had fun.” 19 year-old McKenna Jones said to Deven Johansson, a hand at the Brewer’s ranch.
Deven smiled, “Listen McKenna, I really like you, but, I uh can tell, you’re not over Lake yet.” McKenna sighed, courting always ended like this. “If you ever want to talk, I’m always at the ranch.” She nodded and smiled. Deven leaned over and kissed her cheek.
Deven jumped off the porch and walked towards the Brewer’s, his hands in his Levi pockets.
McKenna sighed and walked into the small house. “How was your walk with Deven?” Sara, McKenna’s twin sister asked. McKenna smiled. “Don’t like Sara, I know you were eavesdroppin’.” Sara blushed. “I’m sorry, you know me… I couldn’t resist.”
McKenna smiled sweetly at her sister, and hugged her tightly. “It’s alright. Maybe Lela can get his attention now.” Sara smiled thinking of their sweet blonde friend.
As the sound of crying calves and mooing cows reached Sara and McKenna’s ears they ran to the door, holding three year old Kenzi’s hand tightly. When their Daddy and the hands rode in Sara and McKenna’s hearts stopped.
“Lake” McKenna mumbled. Her heart was caught somewhere between thrill and dread.
“DADDY!” Kenzi yelled snapping both girls out of their trances. The toddler ripped her hands from her sisters’ grips. Kenzi ran right into the herd of cows, calves, horses, and ranch hands. “Kenzi!” McKenna and Sara yelled. Before anybody knew what was happening Kenzi let out a small scream as Lake pulled her up onto his saddle.
When Lake helped Kenzi down off his horse, the small brunette curtsied making Lake smile, “Thank you Mr.,” Kenzi’s big blue eyes looked up expectantly at Lake. “Danielson, Lake Danielson.” Kenzi giggled “Mr. Danielson” Lake chuckled and bowed, “Your welcome Miss,” his grey eyes looked up at Kenzi, who giggled. “Kenzi Jones.” Lake smiled “Miss Kenzi, now if you’d excuse me I’ve got some business to take care of.” Lake started up the stairs, onto the porch. “Hey ‘Kenna.” Lake said. “Thank you for saving Kenzi.” McKenna said before running in the house, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Lake started to follow ‘Kenna as she ran I the house, crying. But he felt a small hand on his arm, he turned to see Sara, ‘Kenna’s almost identical twin, only four people could tell them apart. Their Mamma and Daddy, Lela and him. Kenna’s eyes had a different glow than Sara’s did. “Hey Sara.” He said enthusiastically. He wrapped her in a tight hug. “What’s wrong with ‘Kenna?” Sra looked at the door. “Lake, you were gone for six years. You broke your promise.”
Lake started to walk off. “Wait, Lake!” Sara called. Lake turned around. “Yeah?” Sara blushed “That fella’ next to ya, with blonde almost brown hair… who is he?” Lake smiled, “My brother, Paxton.”
