Peppermint Girl

By Victoria Barlow

She eyed them warily, unsure of which to chose. How could she tell they weren’t lying to her? Only time would tell. Only time would show the aftermath of her decision. Both sounded sincere enough, but how could she tell? This decision could be life-altering. Whichever she chose she was bound to come back to again, if they told the truth.

Her blue eyes darted from side to side before focusing on them again. Her palms were beginning to get sweaty. She hesitantly wiped her hands on her jeans, not wanting them to see her uncertainty. She tried to gulp down her fear, but her mouth was dry.

Maybe if she walked away from them, or slept on it over night she would be able to make a better decision… No, this had to be done today. It was critical that she make her choice today, or else who knows when she would see them both together again. She had a hard enough time finding them like this as it were.

But her choice had to be beneficial, not just for her, but for them as well. She wanted both parties to be pleased with the choice she made, so she had to take her time and weigh the consequences of her actions.

It was a hard, mental battle as well, making a choice such as this. Not only was she trying to prevent them from seeing her squirm, she was also trying not to make a rash decision.

Once again, she wiped her palms on her pants.

She licked her dry lips, then pursed them together. Her eyes shifted from one to the other. Hopefully, they would not notice her uncertainty she had shown earlier if she made her decision right now.

Slowly, ever so carefully, she took one step forward. Then another. And another. She could hardly believe she was doing this. It seemed too sudden. Maybe she should back down now and try again after she thought it out better.

No, she was already there, staring at them both. But this time she had made up her mind. She reached forward with her right arm, hand outstretched and brushed her fingers on the one on the right before picking up the one on the left.

She quickly turned and walked away before she could second guess herself. Proudly, she strode up to the cashier and placed her peppermint gum on the counter.

“That it?” He asked in a bored tone.

“Yup, that’s it,” she smiled at how she had executively made her decision over which gum to chose.

“You want it in a bag?” He asked.

Her eyes widened as the process started all over again.
