Not Enough

There were many times

When my friend felt happy

And she came up to me

And said “I love you” randomly

I was surprised at that moment

Like I didn’t know what to say

‘Cuz I felt if I repeated—

It would feel a little fake.

I should have said,

“You mean the world to me—

You’re one of my closest friends.

And I’ll be there if you’re in need

I’ll be your lighthouse in the dark.

I’ll be your sunlight when you’re cold.

I know it seems like so much

But to me it’s not enough.”

On those lonely days

When I feel kind of empty

I call my friend up on his phone

Because his voice is all I need.

He knows exactly what to say

Because he’s known me for so long

And in his own special way

He has helped me to be strong

I should have said,

“You mean the world to me.

You’re one of my closest friends

And I’ll be there if you’re in need

I’ll be your lighthouse in the dark.

I’ll be your sunlight when you’re cold.

I know it seems like so much

But to me it’s not enough.”

Maybe you don’t know it

But in my loneliness

You have made me feel so loved.

And I feel so blessed.

I should have said,

“You mean the world to me.

You’re one of my closest friends.

I’ll be there if you’re in need.

I know you’ll catch me if I fall.

I know I’d do that same for you.

And I hope when we’re grown,

you still feel the way I do.”
