-1Breakaway Chapter 1
Please note all characters, teams, settings, and etc are completely fictitious and bear no resemblance to anyone in real life.
“The Ravens are at full strength." The announcer announced at the local hockey game at the halfway point of the second period of the Black Ravens hockey game. Jayzen Townsend, fresh from work, complete in scrubs, stepped over feet, coats, purses, and drinks to make her way through the city’s largest convention center.
“Is this seat taken? Someone’s sitting in mine.” Jayzen asked a taller, dark haired girl, her eyes on the game as she asked. The girl shook her head, her eyes also on the game and the action going on. A fight was in the midst of breaking out. Jayzen sat down slowly, her eyes on the rink, ready to start yelling if need be. She noticed the score was evenly tied, go figure, she thought. A tactic a lot of the minor league hockey teams used to try to uneven the playing field so they could get in another goal.
“Come on, that’s not right!!” The dark haired girl yelled as one of the more well known players was led to the penalty box while the other instigator was skating back to his bench, a satisfied grin on his face. The game started again and the Ravens scored. Jayzen jumped up out of her chair, extremely excited and yelled, earning a look of shock from the girl beside her. “Way to go, Jeremy!!” she clapped her hands, her face flushed with excitement.
“You know him?” She asked, raising a quizzical eyebrow. The long blonde curly pony-tailed girl blushed even more and nodded her head.
“That’s Jeremy Sloan, the captain. He’s one of the best players in this league.” She nodded, still clapping, her eyes still on the game, until she felt the stare down she was getting.
“I see.” The girl said in an almost disgusted voice, causing Jayzen to look up at her. Jayzen realized she probably sounded like she knew him personally, as in personally involved with him.
“NO. Oh, no…You’re thinking personally, right? Oh my God, it’s not like that.” The blonde laughed, rolling her eyes at her blondeness. “I was just saying as a player from a fan, I know who he is. I thought maybe you were a newbie to the games.” She laughed, trying to explain, stammering. “I’m just a huge fan of the team. I get excited.” Jayzen’s deep blue eyes were wide, filled with conviction as she studied the quiet black haired girl, intimidated by her silence still to her explanation. “I didn’t mean to imply anything.” She looked down, her nervousness apparent.
“My name’s Isis.” The girl smiled at her, amused by the blondish rambling Barbie look a like.
“Jayzen.” The blonde subconsciously moved a wispy strand of hair out of her hands while using the other hand to shake the girl’s hand. The boys on the ice were on a breakaway even though short handed, and the crowd was going wild with cheers, the atmosphere almost hard to describe, one of the best things about the sport of hockey. “Come on Ravens!! Put it in the net!!” Jayzen jumped up, her concentration now fully on the game. Isis studied her, seeing she was an average type girl but with a almost a hidden modelesque quality, but not such an average fan. She knew the calls, the plays, and aside from that, was very loud in yelling support for the team she was supporting.
“The Black Ravens will be signing autographs at section 104 directly after the game. Get your autographs from these hard working players while you can. Last signing of the season.” The announcer informed the arena’s loud crowd as the last few final minutes ticked down off of the clock.
“Nice to meet you.” Jayzen jumped up at the buzzer, all smiles while she gathered her long black fuzzy coat and purse. She headed to the exit and to the section mentioned earlier to wait in line for autographs. She smiled happily to herself, seeing she was only third in line. She was glad to have beaten the massive crowd.
“Miss, you in line for autographs?” A security officer asked, getting a nod from her. He raised an eyebrow and pointed to the opposite end of the section, where a bigger line was already formed. “The line’s over there, sweetheart.” He smiled, making her grimace at him calling her sweetheart. She sighed, but never the less, headed that way to the line.
“Thanks.” She muttered, irritated and figuring this was just her luck to be one of the first people in the ‘wrong’ line.
“Wow girl. You are a devoted fan, for sure to try to brave this line.” Isis shook her head. “I wondered where you raced off to.” She smiled.
“Yeah, I thought I’d be early enough to get a good place in line.” Jayzen rolled her eyes, exasperated and sounding disappointed.
“Forget this and come with me.” The black headed, green-eyed girl smiled, pulling her out of the line. Jayzen hesitated for a second but let herself be pulled out, seeing her point. This line would take a few hours, more than likely. “There’s a club across the walkway. They’ll show up there sooner or later. You skip the line and you get to drink while waiting. Bonus on a bonus. I’ll even buy.” she grinned, shrugging like it was simple math while leading the blonde by the arm around the circular building to the elevators.
“Ok, ok, you win. A drink does sound good.” she agreed, stepping onto the elevator and putting on her coat and pretty little matching gloves. “I like your name.” She smiled, her eyes studying the cars below as they walked to the downtown area of the city, the party spot for town, otherwise known as Brick town.
“Thanks. Yours is tight too.” Isis nodded, returning the compliment. “So, what do you want to drink?” She asked as the two girls walked into a club called Club Velocity. The two sat down as ‘Bring em Out’ by TI was thumping loudly on the floor.
“Hmm, a strawberry daiquiri sounds great.” Jayzen answered, her fingers twirling her rings, unaware she did that when she was nervous.
“Whipped cream?” “Isis asked, making Jayzen laugh, as she was about to make sure and mention that was a requirement.
“Wow, do you read minds? Can you ask them to put extra on that, please?” She asked, almost timidly.
“No. I won’t ask them.” Isis shook her head, pulling her long black hair up into a clippie, laughing at Jayzen’s shocked look that resembled a deer in the headlights look. “I’ll tell them. That’s how I am, I just tell people how it is.” She winked, making Jayzen smile and laugh out of relief. “Be right back.” She nodded, disappearing into the crowd. Jayzen took out her trading cards she had planned on having the guys sign for her, wanting to make sure she had them ready. Isis sat the drinks down rather hard, startling her a bit.
“Thanks, that was quick.” She coughed, caught off guard at her quick return. “You really think some of them will show up here tonight? I thought they all went to The Bar and Grill over on the next street.” Jayzen chewed on her bottom lip nervously. She realized this and took out her straw and concentrated on licking the whipped cream off instead.
“I’m sure they’ll be here. Something about contracts and advertisement.” Isis nodded confidently. “So, enjoy the game?” She asked, downing a good portion of her drink.
“Yeah, it was a great game. All but when Ratcliff got the only punishment in that fight, when they both clearly needed it. That was an unfair slip up on the zebras. They both shoulda been tossed if Ratty had to be tossed.” Jayzen’s eyes almost seemed to darken. Her blue eyes were huge and so expressive, they conveyed what she was feeling emotionally very well, Isis took note.
“Yeah, I agree. And you know Ratcliff’s temper is bad, you know he had to be seething after they tossed him.” Isis laughed.
“I think he’s an awesome player. One of the best in the league.” Jayzen nodded, smiling. “And the other thing that called wrong was the hooking call Ames got. Refs suck most of the time, so no big shock.” She nodded again, matter of factly, her face turning red with either excitement of talking about the game or the alcohol, or maybe even both.
“Well, you really know your game, girly. I’m impressed.” Isis commented, clanking her drink with hers, somewhat shocked.
“Sorry, I’m rambling. I do that a lot.” Jayzen admitted, stirring her drink.
“It’s all good. At least you know how to have a conversation. It’s good to see a girl who loves the sport as much as I do for the sport and not just for the fine asses playing it or to be a groupie.” She admitted, finishing her drink.
“Hockey is the best sport of any of them. Except maybe competitive cheerleading.” She smiled, her nose feeling like it was getting red, which it always did when she drank any kind of alcohol.
“Can I see your cards?” Isis asked, taking her time to look through each of them as Jayzen played with her straw. “Want another drink? I do.” Isis asked, cards still in her hand as she stood up to make another trek to the bar.
“Sure, let me buy this round.” Jayzen started to reach into her purse. Isis had already left by the time she fished out the money and looked up.
“Don’t worry, it’s on me.” Isis waved off the money once she got back. Jayzen’s attention was soon focused on who was standing at the door and she inhaled a deep breath.
“That’s Brad Ames! They must be coming here after all.” She said, sitting up excitedly, impressing Isis even more.
“You doubted me, huh?” She raised an eyebrow, making the blonde laugh. “Just kidding. Impressive you can even tell who they are without their jerseys. Be right back. Don’t move.” She smiled, getting up again, Jayzen just nodding, her eyes focused on the 5’ll hockey player being surrounded by females as he made his way through the packed club. She then noticed a few more players. She was hoping Isis made it back soon, just realizing she still had hold of her trading cards.

“Hey, Mr. Popular, can you sign these for me?” Isis asked, asking one of the players as she sat at the bar, waiting for her third round of drinks to be handed to her, grinning.
“Sure, I’m glad you are such a fan of mine.” Jarred Billings fluttered his eyelashes playfully, getting a punch in the arm. “When did you get into town? Were you at the game tonight?” He asked, watching her expression as he took the card from her.
“Yeah, up in the stands. I occasionally just like to sneak in and watch from the stands. Better view than the hallway, you know.” She smiled, taking back the card and inspecting it for quality. A few of the other teammates joined the two at the bar. “Sign these, boys. Please.” She coughed and added, getting odd looks from them.
“These are high dollar cards. You could asked, and you know we would have given them to you. But we’re flattered. Gimme a hug.” Brad Ames laughed, going in for a hug, already smelling like he had had a few drinks.
“You are so funny, smart boy. These are for a fan of you guys. She’s a big fan, knows the game, knows your faces out of the jerseys, knows the calls and is loud as hell. She could replace a whole herd of ice girls with her loud yells.” Isis smiled, knowing she would intrigue some interest. Jarred looked at her skeptically.
“What?” She asked innocently.
“A girl? Is she cute?” Brad asked, looking quite interested.
“Blake know you made it to the game?” Jeremy Sloan walked up, standing tall behind Isis. He was one of her best friends.
“No. I just wanted to watch tonight’s game from a fan’s perspective.” Isis took the cards back and put them in her pocket on purpose, not wanting him to sign his yet.
“Maybe you can get him out of his attitude, thank God.” Bobo, one of the forwards chirped in his Canadian Accent, looking relieved.
“I’ll be back. Don’t tell him I’m here. It’s a surprise.” She warned, especially pointing a finger to Bobo. She headed back to the table to a very impatient Jayzen. “Sorry girl. I was going to get them to sign it, but they want a night off and said to catch them next time.” Isis looked apologetic setting down the drinks on the table and then slid the signed cards over to the disappointed looking girl, trying to hide her smile.
“How did you do that?!!” Her eyes lit up, seeing they were signed, making Isis think of a kid on Christmas.
“Magic, don’t you know?” Isis asked, grinning as she finished her drink. “No, they were at the bar when I was getting our drinks. Who is your favorite? Fess up.” She said, getting comfortable, keeping an eye on the door.
“I guess you could say Jeremy and Blake.” She said, after thinking about her answer for a minute, her eyes also glued on the door, her hopes high of seeing the rest of them come in.
“Blake has a girl.” Isis said matter of factly, trying to not be too obvious.
“Oh, I don’t like him like that. I mean, he has a lot of skill.” Jayzen blushed, her eyes on her cards and then meeting Isis’s stare.
“You like Jeremy?” Isis asked, trying to not seem too intimidating.
“He’s got talent, he leads his team very well. Probably better than any other captain I have seen.” Jayzen chose her words carefully and speaking slowly.
“Here, I can get Ratcliff’s for you. I’ll be back.” She jumped up, seeing him come in the door. The music on was Queen’s “We will rock you” and it was a pumped up song making the club crowd come more alive than what it had already been. Jayzen was content to sing along with the song and the rest of the club as the rest of the players slowly filed in.
“Hey you!” Isis yelled over the stomping of feet and clapping of hands to number 18 of the Black Ravens.
“Hey! When did you get into town?” he asked, his jet black hair shining in the dark club light, his surprise evident. He picked her up and swung her around.
“I was at the game, Mr. eight total penalty minutes. That’s a lot for my forward.” She purred playfully in his ear, rubbing his soft hair as they somewhat danced together.
“I was missing you, what can I say? Maybe I was a little in the mood for a fight.” He laughed and admitted.
“Yeah? Well, it was hot. And very nice from the normal Mr. nice guy.” She smiled, kissing him softly. “I was sitting up in the stands and I met like this huge fan. Can you sign this for her?” She asked, still holding him tightly. She often traveled on location for her job and they didn’t get a lot of time to spend together.
“Anything to make you happy.” He kissed her back, using her back to sign it.
“And it just so happens she is a huge number four fan.” She smiled, pulling away to look him in the eyes, her eyes sparkling with mischief and a deviant twinkle.
“NO, no, no. I know where you are going with this. He’s done with the groupies, the girls, all of it, baby. You know this already.” He shook his head.
“Well, she’s a fresh change. Not a groupie, and although a girl, I think they would make a perfect match. He’d really fall for her. She’s been talking hockey all night and has no clue I’m with you, know the team or anything. She’s real.” Isis tried to convince her boyfriend, pointing her out to him, where Jayzen sat there, almost as if she was lost in her own thoughts.
“I’m sure he’d like how she looks but I doubt he’d even let you get half of your idea out before he’d shut you down.” Blake shook his head.
“Just promise me you’ll help me if I need it. Pretty please?” Isis gave him her best puppy dog sad face.
“I don’t know…” He hesitated. She leaned in, kissing his ear and smiling, knowing it was driving him nuts. “Ok, ok. One last try. You have to promise this is it.” He held the back of her head, looking into her beautiful eyes. She nodded, smiling and glad she won that battle.
“You are awesome. You can start by telling him I am looking for him.” Isis kissed him hard, excited to get to play matchmaker. It wasn’t her normal thing, but something told her this girl was the ONE for her best friend. “I’ll be right over there once I get these signed.” She promised, forcing herself to tear away from him.
“I’ll do that for you and you take him over there. He’ll be coming in any minute.” Blake sighed, hoping this wouldn’t be a bad thing, but knowing there was no way to stop Isis once she got started on a plan.
“Thanks Baby.” Isis smiled triumphantly and headed off for the table once more, sliding into the booth.
“I guess I should get going.” Jayzen yawned, starting to get her stuff together, but stopped, her eyes fixated on the door.
“Jayzen?” Isis waved her hand in front of her new friend’s face to get her attention. “Ah, the life of the party has arrived, I see.” she smiled, seeing Jeremy walk in.
“Uh huh.” Was all Jayzen could manage to get out, her eyes not leaving the tall hockey captain.
“Go ask him to sign his card, Blondie.” Isis nudged her.
“ No, it’s okay. I couldn’t…I mean, I can’t…he’s busy being swarmed with all those puck bunnies.” She replied, her face flushed at even the thought of attempting her suggestion.
“Signed, sealed, and delivered.” Blake walked up, laying the rest of the cards on the table with a smile. Jayzen’s jaw dropped.
“Jayzen, I’m pretty sure you know Blake. This is my fiancé.” She smiled, standing up to let him in the booth. “I’ll be right back.” she nodded.
“Does she have attention deficit disorder?” Jayzen asked, shaking her head.
“No, why do you ask that?” Blake asked, laughing.
“She has been up and down and disappearing all night like that.” Jayzen said, her eyes trying to find her in the ever growing crowd.
“That’s just Isis. Nice to meet you. So your name is Jayzen?” he asked, adjusting his tie and wiping the sweat off of his forehead, almost as if he was self conscious.
“You guys were great out there tonight.” Jayzen said, not sure of what else to say. She was overwhelmed one of her favorite players was sitting here with her.
“Thanks. Looking for anyone in particular?” He asked, raising an eyebrow, finishing off his girl’s drink.
“Me? No.” she replied, unsure if was obvious that she was trying to find Mr. Captain himself. “Just taking in the scene. I don’t go out much.” She coughed, and took a drink, glad she could come up with a decent answer on the spot.
“So, you from here” he asked, checking his phone for a text message he had just gotten.
“Yeah. So can I ask you what it’s like being on the ice and skating so fast. And scoring and hearing the whole crowd go crazy? It’s got to be a rush.” She asked, getting that excited look back about her.
“For sure, it’s a rush.” Blake laughed. Bobo came walking by, and then backing up. “What’s up, Bobo?” Blake asked.
“Can I sit down here? All the tables are full.” He complained, reminding Jayzen of an overgrown child as he flashed her a smile and made her laugh.
“Sure. But not by me.” Blake shook his head.
“Well, then Scoot over, Blondie. I hear you are quite the fan.” He said, taking the cards from the table and looking them over. “I hope mine is in here somewhere.” He nodded.
“It is, you big baby.” Blake rolled his eyes. “ I wonder where Isis is.” He mused out loud.
“Brewing up a killer plan, I mean party.” Bobo replied, smiling peevishly.
“Oh, I bet she is.” Blake nodded.
