Chapter One: The Boy In The Closet
“Riley, when you’re done could you help me with my science project?” my little brother, Bailey asked me.
“Sure, Bailes” I replied, typing on my computer, trying to finish a history paper.
“Riles, when you’re done with that, could you help me make dinner” my dad asked, walking into my room.
“Um, I’m helping Bailey with his science project” I replied, turning around in my chair to face him.
“Oh, that’s all right” my dad said, nodding. “By the way, how did you do on your computer test?”
“Oh, I, uh, got a 82” I replied slowly. My dad smiled and crossed the room to me and kissed my forehead.
“I’m proud of you” he murmured.
“I know” I replied, avoiding his gaze as he walked out of the room. I sighed, shut down my computer and flopped onto my bed.
“Life’s a bitch” I muttered.
My name is Riley Jackson, and I’m 14 years old. I have a father, and a brother. My mom passed away when I was really little. But the worst part is, my father thinks and treats me like I’m perfect. But I’m far from it. I get bad grades, I get detention almost all of the time, I have a really bad temper that gets the best of me most times, earning me the nickname SpitFire, and I always get into fights, fist fights. But it’s not my fault, the other person, mainly a guy, is just too much of a dick to back down.
I’m far from perfect; I just hoped that my dad would stop treating me like I was.

“Mom, just shut the fuck up!” I screamed, holding my hands over my ears.
“DON’T YOU EVER TELL ME TO SHUT UP YOU LITTLE PIEC EOF SHIT! I DON’T CARE IF YOU SAY YOU LOST TRACK OF TIME, YOU COME HOME WHEN I TELL YOU TO!” My mom screamed back at me. “NOW CLEAN THIS MESS UP!” she added, indicating to a broken beer bottle on the floor.
“WHY DON’T YOU CLEAN IT UP?” I yelled back and bolted to my room, I could hear my mom following me. I didn’t know if it was the adrenaline from the booze or from her anger, but she was gaining fast. I slammed my door shut and locked it before she could get into my room.
“YOU BETTER OPEN THIS DOOR YOU MOTHER FUCKER!” Mom screamed at me.
“AND YOU BETTER CHECK YOUSELF INTO REHAB!” I screamed back, gathering clothes and my prized possessions into a bag.
“OPEN THIS GODDAMN DOOR!”
“NO! I’M SICK OF THIS LIFE! I’M SICK OF YOU AND YOUR BEER! CALL ME WHEN YOU’RE SOBRE!” I yelled back and opened my window, dropping the bag to the ground.
I climbed out the window and into the tree that was next to it and dropped to the ground. I grabbed my bag and started to run down the street, not stopping until I reached downtown and the bus station.
My name is Lucas. You don’t need to know my last name. I’m sixteen and my mom’s a drunk. I’ve been living in this bad life since I was born and wanted to get out of it since I was eight. And it took me eight long years to get enough courage to finally leave. That just proves how much of a scaredy cat I am.

“That was great dad; I’m going to go finish my homework!” I called as I walked up the stairs to my room.
“But what about my science project?” Bailey whined, following me.
“Later, I promise” I replied and closed the door to my room. I sighed as I paced back and forth, trying to think of ways to tell my dad that I was failing a class. “Life’s a bitch” I repeated an earlier statement.
“Tell me about it”
I gasped and whirled around, seeing a boy standing behind me, dripping water onto the rug, staring at me.
“Hi, I’m Lucas”
