Liar

I mean to tell you the truth,

Or at least I think I do,

But before I can

Pluck together the proper words

To format a capable explanation,

My mind spins a quick

And easy lie-

Too easy. It’s becoming natural,

Yet another habit,

An addiction I can’t shake.

Or is it that I don’t want to?

My crafty invention slides past the truth

And falls out of my mouth,

Slimy and thin, like the spider web

I accidentally swallowed years ago.

My lie floats between us,

Hoping for thoughtless acceptance

But prepared to defend itself

Against a careful scrutiny.

But you nod and turn and go

And leave me choking

On the silky strands of a spider’s web.
