Ode to King George III

Oh, Great King George III

what sort of life did you live?

King by birth, farmer by heart

for sixty years you reigned over England

As a young prince, you vowed to be

a father to your people

A man to be respected, not feared

Loved, not hated

When the voices of America arose,

you were hurt and confused

The Houses made laws, you had

little to do with what they did

In the mist of war, few things

could bring you comfort

Farming and Handel’s music brought

joy, if only for a while

American Revolution, French Revolution,

the War of 1812

Your country plagued with

endless war and violence

You cried, you mourned, you

fell into depression

You watched yourself lose it,

while illness consumed you

A less popular man would have

ended the royal family of England

May you rest in peace, dear king

and allow God to save your soul
