What’s A Woman?
An Essay By V.E. Silber
“Excuse me very much but who made you king of the Earth?” I would like to say to men. But instead, I will write this essay. Being a woman in Mexico, you see, is an awful burden of the mind, on a constant basis. Will I get that job, will they take into account what I have to say, will I get harassed today… Questions that fill a women’s head on daily basis when living in Mexico and they really shouldn’t have to. Women shouldn’t have to live in fear of themselves. And what I mean by this is that when a woman is at the best and fullest capacity of being a woman, she radiates. But when she radiates it’s like some sort of radar that men have, they pick up on it, swoop down and, pardon my language, shit all over it. They can’t have a woman radiating! My God no! Imagine what a woman could become, what a woman could do to pathetic little cave-scraping man, if she found out what she really was. And what is a woman? She is mother Earth. She is capable of creating, carrying and giving birth to life. What can men do? Hunt. Back to that basic instinct, which you would know about it you read my first essay. Men know, of course they know, what a woman can become if they let her. She can become God (Goddess rather) herself. That’s why they must oppress, oppress, oppress! Because men, who are pathetic, beastly, instinctually animalistic creatures were to be deprived of the one thing they’ve figured out – how to dominate women – then their entire species could be obliterated. They must protect the future of the clan. Thus, women since the beginning of history and time have been oppressed, for fear that they may figure out what they are. Mary Magdalene was portrayed as a whore because, of course, they couldn’t have people thinking that it was alright to admire the femininity and heavenliness of a woman, as Jesus did simply in the act of loving her. The Pagan religions were destroyed by the Catholic politicians because of course they couldn’t have whole religions based on the worship and idolatry of a woman. In the days when men were dragging their knuckles and we all had one big eyebrow, even then they figured out “Woman must not learn. Woman smart. Woman not need man if woman learn.” But men as a species figured out a long time ago how they could control women. Biologically, women just aren’t as big or as strong. Women are in fact the physically weaker of the two (though modern science could prove otherwise with steroids). In Darwin’s theory then women should be extinct. And they would be, if someone hadn’t decided to cease the witch trials. And those witch hunts, the church knew what it was doing. Since the beginning of the Catholic religion the Church has been oppressing women for the fear of how powerful they may become. The possibility arose that women may suspect how smart they really were and all of a sudden “She’s a witch! Burn her at the stake!” But back to the biological factor.
Nature just simply gave the woman the shorter end of the stick when it made her. Honestly. Smaller, weaker, menstrual cycles, pregnancy (whole nine month periods in which a woman is basically useless and entirely dependant on a male figure to care for her and protect her). Women were made to be dependant on men. If you see it that way. I prefer to think that nature made men dependant on women. If women were to learn to hunt the buffalo and were to learn to make the cave-paintings, then men would be out of a role, except for that they were needed to continue the race through their sperm. In the Viking civilization, the woman was the dominant one of the house-hold. The men would get drunk for months at a time and go sailing and pillaging and come back infrequently to bring home the acquired booty. But the woman was the one who raised the children, who decided who her daughters were going to marry, what profession her sons were to have, and if she found her spouse inadequate she was allowed to annul the marriage and find a new spouse. In fact, if her husband was displeasing her she could throw him out of the house if she wished it so. And then the women were huge, dominant and powerful. And the men weren’t intimidated in the least. But then why didn’t this tradition last? Because biologically the male couldn’t handle it. After centuries of existing in such a manner, he eventually cracked, and things went back to the way they had always been. Even the symbolism for male and female – for men the blade and for women the grail – implies in its very nature the dominant and the submissive. It’s as if it were predestined by man’s biological fanaticism. But women can change this, you see.
Now, in an age where the church is no longer the dictator of personal thought and hard labor no longer dictates success or survival, it is possible for a woman to become that powerful Mother Nature she was always meant to be. Women are the smarter of the two sexes. Genetically it has been proven that women are the only sex capable of multitasking. Women carry the gene for intelligence. Men, of course, will debate this to no end. Bring up this subject to any modern day man, educated or not, and he will not only be incapable of understanding these concepts but he will debate that through personal experience “men are smarter”. The dumb blonde theory, the submissive dumb little woman that needs a man around. They’re all façades to play up that theory that women need men. If a woman is smart, nowadays, what does she need a man for? And honestly, more women play stupid than not because it goes back to the fundamental fact that even the modern day a man, educated or not, is more likely to prefer the less intelligent woman than the woman who is smarter than they are. There is nothing that intimidates them more than the possibility that they are not needed. As soon as a woman proves her independence, they bail. They can’t handle the concept, it makes their small minds hurt. But then, if men are these horrible elitist creatures that are so animalistic and so terrifyingly capable of anything to stop a woman from being more powerful than they are, what is it then with us women and loving men? In fact, we obsess.
Though I shouldn’t be too quick to speak because there are women who do not in fact need, love or want man and are in fact homosexual – and I support these women immensely, if only I had the predisposition to prefer the female sex to the male one, I would be much more content in my life. But what is it with us loving men? Dare I say, needing men? Could it be the millions of years of cultural mind fs that beat it into our chemistry? But what of us women that have found, dare I say, smart, caring, nice guys? It’s not an anomaly, girls. In fact, it’s not even rare. So what is it? What the hell have I been talking about for nearly two pages? They don’t know it, girls. But really, there’s a little cave-man deep down inside of them saying “Run! This woman is smart! She knows what she’s doing! She doesn’t need you!” But we do, that’s the sad thing. And they need us.
There’s a spiritual theory, brought up in the film Moonstruck, that when God created Adam and Eve, he took a rib from Adam and used it to create Eve, so men will forever need women because they are forever looking to fill that void. But what’s our void? Why do we need them so badly? One could say that in search for the man we came from we look to better understand ourselves. It could be the biological factor. Instinctually we feel we need men to continue the species (which of course is now unnecessary with modern science). But no, it’s deeper than that. We are Mother Nature! We are the eternal mothers: we must protect, love, nurture and raise. And men are the eternal babies, forever, from the moment of birth, looking to replace their mothers with a mate. And what a woman wants to do when she sees a baby is raise it. They hate us, they abuse us, they torture and oppress us, but we have to forgive. It’s in our DNA. It’s in our genetic makeup. We forgive. “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” We are divine, we were created divine. It’s proof enough that we can carry life itself inside of us. And thus it is only natural that we should be capable of the most divine act of all: forgiveness.
They say woman are vengeful, but throughout history who have been most famous for holding a grudge…? With men that are nice, we must nurture. When one is nice, one is flawed. Flaws in men make them all the more loveable in our eyes, because we can forgive (what a joy!) their mistakes and raise them (oh bliss!). We can teach them. We want to take care of them. Even the strongest woman when presented with the man of her dreams (usually the most flawed of all), all she wants to do is forgive him and take care of him. We are mothers. And there’s nothing a mother does better than mother. We need to mother our men, and men need to be mothered. This is why we are destined to need one another, and that is why men are so afraid of us! Because they give us such power over them! That is why things will never change. Because we can’t change instinct, nature or society. It is in the sculpting of millions of years that things of such magnitude come to pass. In the wake of merely a century, this is the one thing in which we are powerless. In a world where we are unequal and there is nothing to be done, then what shall we do? Detest our circumstances, forgive them, never forget, and remember we are divine. We do not need men to recognize that. We are Goddesses, and not even men can take that away from us. So when you feel discouraged by this male-dominated society, remember this one thing: You Are A Woman! And you don’t need a man to tell you that.
