New World Order: Chapter 6

I woke up a while later. I had no idea how long I was out. But I felt horrible. I mean, I was going to throw up. The feeling soon faded though.

I rolled over and sat up. I was sitting on a bed, in what looked like the hospitals I had seen in books, except the walls were all cold metal. I tried to get up, but my wrist was handcuffed to the bed. I shook the handcuff and received an electric shock. I cried out as the current stung my wrist and sent pain up my arm.

“Shit!” I screamed. The curtain was pulled open and a human stepped in. I don’t know why I kept addressing them as human. At heart, I’m human, and I consider myself human. But when I said human, I meant the cowards who fled the virus. Not the resistance.

“Ah, the specimen has woken up.” Announced the doctor. He had a stuck up air about him, like he was better than me. He was wearing a lab coat and white pants. Typical doctor stuff.

“Get me out of these things.” I growled. He chuckled.

“Right, so you can eat my brains?” He laughed. I glared at him.

“Virals don’t eat brains you idiot, they use energy from the sun to produce their own food, like plants.”

“Oh yes, then why did those big ones try to eat three soldiers?” He gestured to three bedridden men in beds at the other side of the room.

“Well, if you had a hundred teeth, were 20 feet tall, and wanted to do some damage, what would you do?” He withdrew a remote while I was saying this a pressed a button when I was finished. Another jolt ran through my arm.

“AH! You bastard! What did you do that for?” I shrieked. He shrugged.

“Dunno, felt like it.” He smirked and walked over to a work station and picked up a phone, then said some things into it and came back to me when he was done.

“The Commander is on the way, so be good now.” He said, like a parent talking to a child, waving a finger in my face. I suddenly got an idea and grinned.

“What is it?” He said, leaning in close to me, “Eh, given up already?” I spat in his face and the chaos broke out. He started screaming and three more doctors showed up, all trying to wipe his face clean. They thought he would be infected. I laughed, then I noticed the remote had fallen onto the floor. It had an unlock button on it and I pressed it. The handcuffs fell off and I rubble my wrist. I was still wearing my jeans and t-shirt, but my jacket and fire system were gone. I wasn’t surprised that they took my weapon.

Just then, while the doctors were preparing to place the doctor in quarantine, the Commander (I’m assuming) walked in, three soldiers following her in.

“What is the meaning of this?” She boomed as she saw the fake pandemic taking place.

“That thing infected Doctor Connors!” Sobbed one of the nurses, while helping the doctors to secure him to a bed. The Commander eyed him, then turned to me.

“Did you infect him?” She asked calmly. The soldiers looked ready to open fire if I should say yes.

“Hah, I wish. I just spat at him after he zapped me a few times.” I grinned, despite the fact that I was obviously in deep shit. At this all the doctors stopped, looked at me, then at Dr. Connors. Then started to go back to what they had been doing, mumbling and growling things to themselves.

“Are you able to infect?” She asked, “And might I warn you, if you can and lie to me, you will be killed on the spot.”

“I have never infected, nor do I ever wish to.”

“You haven’t answered my question.”

“No, I am unable to infect.” I said firmly. The Commander eyed me up. It was then that I realized who she was. It was the same woman who had killed Kyle. She was wearing a uniform now, and I hadn’t recognized her. I wasn’t going to try anything though. I knew if I did I was dead, and that if I showed any anger towards the killing of a Viral I would be equally dead.

“Very good, come with me.” Two of the soldiers walked over and restrained me, while the other one trained his gun on my head while they did it. I was then escorted down along the steel walled hallways to a jail cell. “Brig” It said above the door to the jail. They shoved me in a cell and closed the door. Tiffany was asleep on a bed inside. They had given her a shirt to wear. I walked over and woke her up. She slowly blinked, then sat up rubbing her eyes.

“Hey Victor,” She mumbled, “Where are we?”

“Don’t tell me they stunned you too?” She nodded. I spun around and looked at the Commander who was standing behind the bars.

“You are on my ship. We captured you inside a Viral stronghold. We assumed you were enemies, but when we tested your DNA we found you to be human, and you to be half human.” Neither of us knew what DNA was, but we nodded anyway.

“How have you survived?” She asked, “All of humanity was wiped out save the ones that escaped to Antarctica.” At this I lost my cool.

“You little shit, they didn’t die. You abandoned us. We have been fighting the Viral since you ran away, and now you show up and act like our saviors? There are thousands of us in Canada alone. If you had actually tried to save anyone maybe you would know that.” The Commander looked at me solemnly, and then bowed her head.

“I’m sorry to hear that, we had assumed there was nobody left. We took back most of the islands in the pacific, including Hawaii, and there were no humans left there. That was 100 years ago. We just never assumed anyone could have lasted this long.”

“We haven’t,” Said Tiffany, “They breed us.” This struck the Commander hard. She stood there silent for some time, then gestured weakly to someone out of sight from us. The door opened and she waved for us to come out.

“I’m so sorry.” She said, “Please, I didn’t know.” I got up and walked out, Tiffany following behind me. I couldn’t stand being in the same room as that woman.

When I managed to find someone who wouldn’t run away from us I finally found out where we were. The sub hadn’t left the city yet, which was good. I didn’t want to have any part in this war. I was going to kill Duke Hess and that is all. I had no plans for after that.

We found the exit hatch and were waiting for our things that had been taken to be given back to us when the Commander caught up with us.

“Where are you going to go? You surely don’t want to go back to that hell.”

“Lady, we live in a broken down, dusty, rotten place, and we prefer it over this iron worm.”

“At least let me give you some provisions. Some food, water, maybe a field generator.” I looked to Tiffany. She shrugged.

“We’re four blocks down the street, big green roof. Can’t miss it. Top floor is us.” I said as our things arrived. I put on the mess of tubes and pouches expertly, using a system that would confuse anyone else, and donned my jacket. Tiffany changed her shirt and took her rifle and pistol, then climbed out after me.

We emerged into a whole new Vancouver. Two massive ships with planes on massive platforms atop them sat in the harbor, and there were smaller military boats swarming through the city cleansing it of Viral occupation. Herman came and picked us up, taking us to our boat, then we motored back to the Fairmont.

It was a long walk back up the stairs.

“What do you think about all this?” Asked Tiffany.

“About the new guys?” I heard a boat pass by outside.

“Yeah.”

“I think they’re stuck up bastards, but they may just take back allot of ground.”

“What about staying with them? Maybe going to Antarctica?” I stopped walking and looked at her.

“Do you want that?” I had never imagined her saying something like that. She was usually so loyal and for the most part unquestioning. I mean, I saved her. She wouldn’t abandon me, would she?

“Well, yes,” She said unsurely, “I mean, to be around adults. To have somebody else out there protecting us, we wouldn’t need to work so hard. We could be normal kids.”

“You could be a normal kid maybe.” I started walking again. Tiffany stood there a moment, then started to follow.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. If you want to go with them, then you can go. I won’t stop you, but don’t expect me to come with you. I have business to attend to.” I quickened my step slightly and covered the last flight to the top floor. As I walked in the door the turrets perked up, like watchdogs suddenly smelling intruders, then went back into sleep mode as I registered as a friendly.

I walked past the main room and into my bedroom, then collapsed down onto my bed. Tiffany appeared at my door.

“I’m sorry.” She said again, a tear running down her face. She wasn’t making any noise, she wasn’t shaking, she didn’t even have a sad face. It was just that one tear. I didn’t say anything and after a while she walked away.

“Don’t go.” I said softly, but it was too late. She had left.
