Summary-
To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in a town in the middle of nowhere called
Maycomb, Georgia. In it live Scout Finch, a boisterous 9-year-old, and her brother Jem
and uncle Atticus. They will experience many trials in the novel, and finally come to a
rebirth in their ways of thought, most notably the girl.
Scout- She is the youngest. Full of innocence and spunk, she is querulous in her
efforts to understand things. She finds presents in a tree that were left by Bob Radley.
Radley is a secretive type who was banished from the town but went back to live in the
basement of his old house because he hated everyone. Scout also discovers new music
and this changes her life. She loves to listen to performances by the Maycomb
Ultraband Powerquest.
Jem-
Thus named because his father, a vagrant train-hopper from outside of Maycomb, thought
that he was like a gem. Unfortunately for both of them, his father could not spell gem.
He died soon thereafter. Jem loves baseball, following closely the exploits of his favorite
stars like Hiromatsu Mishima and Goroda Nakitome. He is 13 and a half years old, and
plays with Scout most of the time. He was the one who came up with Scout’s name,
because she was like a scout when they would play adventure games in the abandoned
minefield.
Atticus –
He was born in an attic, and his personality matches that. He is dark and brooding,
raising Jem and Scooter under an iron fist. His other fist is made of flesh, but in an
accident will also be amputated and replaced with cold, emotionless iron. Atticus loves
his children dearly, though his only way to show it is to give them occasional smiles and
knowing glances. He is a lawyer, and well respected in the town of Maycomb.
Quotes –
“The only thing that can save Tom is a train full of muskets.” –Jem Finch, page 21
“Poor Tom, seventh son, gotta die for what you’ve done.” –Robert Plant, “Poor Tom”
page 1
“No thanks, Judge, I already have a best friend. His name is Jack Daniels.” –Atticus,
page 3334
“My mortgage is far overdue. For 500 dollars I will paint a masterpiece.” –Miss Alexandra, page 90
Diary Entry- Scout-
Dear Diary, It’s been quite cold lately. I’m up here in the balcony overlooking the trial,
and it hasn’t gotten any better. Everyone is too white for their own good, and I just know
poor Tom is gonna get crucified by the magistrate. I love that man, and I am making
plans for us to escape together. This farce cannot go on. Captain’s log, stardate May
19th, 1931. For some reason I have become a girl. End log.
Song lyrics from a song that reflects one of the book’s themes- I chose “Thoughts of a
Dying Atheist” by Muse:
Eerie whispers
trapped beneath my pillow
won't let me sleep
your memories
I know you're in this room
I'm sure I heard you sigh
floating in-between
where our worlds collide
It scares the hell out of me
and the end is all I can see
and it scares the hell out of me
and the end is all I can see
yea yea yeaaaaa yea yea
yea yea yea
yea yea o aaa oaaaaaaa!!
I know the moment's near
and there's nothing we can do
look through a faithless eye
are you afraid to die?
It scares the hell out of me
and the end is all I can see
and it scares the hell out of me
and the end is all I can see
yea yea yeaaaaa yea yea
yea yea yea
yea yea o aaa oaaaaaaa!!
Quote by me, recommending this book to other classmates –
“I have ascended beyond the realm of unknown Kadath. I am a master of dreamers.
Look unto this tome, my friends, and send 5 dollars to PO Box 3011, Alpencreek,
