Don’t try to pretend you don’t know me

When you know I’m what keeps you alive.

I’m the blood in your veins, the tears in your eyes,

The gentle boom-boom of your drumming heart.

You shouldn’t pretend you don’t see me

When I walk past you on the street.

I’m the quiver in your voice, the flush on your skin,

The quiet in-out of your half-hearted breathing.

Don’t dare pretend you don’t hear me

When I tell you the truth of your life,

For I’m the memories in your mind, the sickness in your soul,

The anguished sob that fills your chest.

Do not ignore my existence

When I drop by once more.

I’m the blur in your vision, the rings around your eyes,

The thoughts that make you want to disappear.

So don’t try to pretend you don’t know me

When you know I’m what makes you feel alive.

I am pain, your only friend

And I will come knocking again.
