Noah's Coffin

And so I was told that you'd already set sail—
I could see the mist spraying on your cheeks
When I found out how much I'd missed
I hid and wasn't seen for weeks.

I still remember how you'd be hard to find
Your hands were always smudged with gray
When I came up behind you, you turned and grabbed me
I still haven't washed out the stains.

Yes, my blouse is a tribute to your paranoia
While the songs I sang to you were ballads of insecurity
But past confessions and future obligations
Made sure that we were far from a perfect fit.

I'd like to fit inside you now.

When you're gone you're still the boss
No matter where you're sailing I'll still find you
In a picture, a dream, a memory
Shaky, like the rules you left behind.

Dirt on my hands from your grave that I dug
This is how I show I'm waiting for you
Mortality always brings people together
Sure-fire, like a kiss or forbidden touch.

And love is your coffin
I hired a team to construct it
As big as Noah's Ark
This love is waiting for your return.

But trust me, if you were to come home right now
I would destroy love, and the coffin with it,
For the chance to stay in your arms forever
And smell the salt of oceans past.
