A Swan and a Raven

"On the lake a swan was swimming

Her eyes so black, her feathers white

Her long neck to the skies was leaning

When she watched the full moon's light

A raindrop from a tree branch fell

Silent water, rippling slow

The swan she sang a song – a spell –

The spell of winter's coming snow

And in the woods around the lake

There someone heard the magic song

A raven; who a flight did take

And slowly flow to the lake's pond

The raven said; "your song is pretty"

The swan she smiled and tossed her head

Then she sang a song spell mighty

The raven only listened there

When the song it ended now

Silence deep there then prevailed

'Till the raven asked aloud;

"Why in the song you all it veiled?

The snow is coming that I know

Winter's winds are blowing fast

But all it makes your sweet song cold

Don't you want the warmth to last?"

The swan she did not answer soon

But when she did, her voice was sweet;

"I know the winter must come, too

And so I want it's coming lead.

That's the reason why I sing

That's why my song is winter spell

After cold, there will come spring

But now's the time for winter bell."

The swan again did raise her song

She sang so sweetly, voice was pure

The raven listened, listened long

The snow was coming, it was sure

Soon they saw the full moon's veil

When clouds did hide the moonlight

The snow was coming – it's the tale

When snowfall filled the night

The raven and the swan were there

Together by the lake so deep

Watched how the snow the earth did cover

When the skies with ice did weep

The snow had come, the winter, too

The full moon shining on the sky

The swan she swam away, too soon

Thought the raven, who still sat by."
