Genesis
“In the beginning, the Earth created Itself.”
The sun brought heat to the plains, so much heat as to make it unsuitable for life. And yet there was life. Great, reptilian things whose scales were dry like the sand. They moved in herds, or alone, from one oasis to the next. It was a game of survival. They lumbered slowly along, awaiting their end, because they knew the end was near.
And it happened one night, when the sun was swallowed up by the obsidian sky that many new suns sprang forth and fell like angels. They crashed into the earth, creating so much noise and confusion that it all turned to silence. Death was inevitable, so the creatures allowed it to happen, and their bodies were buried beneath waves of ash and dust. The dust shot up into the air, blocking the sun and suffocating the sky.
The earth was thrown into a period of ice and darkness. Eventually, new life emerged. Small, hairy creatures. Mammals. These beasts thrived in the darkness, and showed some compassion for their young. It was no longer a game of survival, but of evolution, and love. As generations passed, the ice slowly melted away, revealing a lush new landscape in its absence. For once the climate was not so extreme, and while some of the mammals went extinct, many survived or lived on in higher forms. Some took the form of primates, those with movable thumbs and limber bodies. Here were creatures designed for skill; a million talents and discoveries waiting for them like gifts to be uncovered.
Evolution, as a process, works in random and mysterious ways. All it takes is a slight deviation from the norm; a little tweak here, another there, resulting in a natural miracle, the only constant being that you’ll turn out better than you were when you went in. It’s a quiet, leisurely process, like the most important ones always are. To think that the earth was made in six days is madness. The truth is, it’s not even finished yet, and will probably never be.
