Chapter 7
Ray adjusted the car mirror, so that apart from the road, he could now watch this most peculiar guy that was lying on the backseat, almost upside down, smoking a cig, with his feet sticking outside from the open car window. It was over an hour since the little incident in the bathroom took place, and Ray managed to calm down entirely. Well... or maybe not that... entirely... but... still.
Before they got in the car, he gave the guy another set of his clothes, not even asking for now what he did with the previous ones he presented him when he met him for the first time – he saved that question and many others for later, to ask in half an hour time, after they both ate something. Kyle didn't speak much after he changed into dry clothes, he kept smiling strangely instead, but he agreed on the idea of eating quite enthusiastically.
They were on their way to a small pizzeria now – one of those Ray visited only once, in his life as he didn't want to risk going to any place someone would try to search for him in. He couldn't afford to be found now.
This was, according to Ray, best solution to this problem – he'll buy the guy a pizza, talk his problems over, because apparently he had some, and finally untangle his life from this bloke's. They will say goodbye, each will walk his own way, and Ray will never see the guy again. He wouldn't mind getting to know Kyle better was it some different time and situation, but now this man would only be a threat, both to Ray and himself. But god, he is hot looking, that Ray had to admit.
-
"How about looking at the road for a change, Ray?",the demon caught Ray's eyes in the mirror and smirked around his cig. "I know I'm drop-dead gorgeous, yes, but you don't want to have me on your conscience in case we crash, do you?"He wanted to add 'again', but decided there will be time for crueler word play later. He didn't want to scare his little gangster off just yet. He saw Ray blush cute pink at this as his eyes disappeared from the mirror. Dave just shook his head and returned to staring at his own feet behind the window.
-
"We're here," Ray announced when the car stopped in front of a shady looking, narrow building with a small, yellowish-transparent roof over the few steps that lead to the shabby door. There was a brand-new shop-sign with a vividly colored pizza hanging sadly down from it, trying to convince passerby potential customers that the food in this place looks better than the place itself. And judging by the fact there was some people actually sitting and eating inside, it worked miracles, that shop sign.
Ray waited for Kyle to climb out of the car. Upon almost closing the car door on the dead cat's tail, the demon spat out the half smoked fag and smashed it under his boot, then came closer to Ray and immediately drew another one from the pocket of the guy's jeans, and stuck it into his mouth with an innocent expression on his face. Ray just rolled his eyes but said nothing as this it was just how this strangest man got his first cig to begin with. Ray didn't really smoke... up until the month ago, that is.
Kyle reached out towards Ray and motioned with his fingers, as if expecting something. Ray didn't get it. The demon tried again, getting nothing but a confused look in response. He sighed.
"Then you want me to look for the lighter myself? OK, why not? I can roll with that." he squinted mischievously and put a hand into Ray's rear pocket, pulling out the red lighter and giving Ray's butt a rough pinch through the fabric of his trousers.
Ray went crimson from rage and not only rage. He didn't see that one coming. What the fuck?! "Do you have some problem, man? Jeezus. Are you oversexed or something? You can tell me, you know." He spat out.
The white-haired man looked at him with his ironic half-smile. "Then feel told." He didn't have to pretend to be nice and fluffy any longer. He didn't feel like being his old self anymore too. He was only nice in order to get back around Ray, but now when he did, more or less, he just wanted to have some fun.
Ray wanted to say something but kept himself from it, deciding it will be really better to discuss it all after stuffing their stomachs with some fast-food and drinking some cool coke to sooth their minds.
Ray's mind in particular. He felt like he was going to implode any minute now, even without this guy's help, thank you very much.
-
They ordered the biggest pizza there was, and a bottle of orange fanta. Best way to start the day, really. At 8:15 am o'fucking-clock.
"I haven't eaten breakfast yet, thanks to you," complained Ray, while they were waiting. He intended to do so when he came back home in the morning, after leaving a few false traces here and there, but for obvious reasons he didn't succeed. Ray also dropped all the sweet-talk he would normally stuff anyone he just met and took out to eat with. Now he had all the right to be bitter and rude as well, because why not?
"If that helps you in some way, I haven't eaten anything since yesterday morning and even longer" commented the demon, tapping his fingers on the shiny surface of pseudo-marble little round table they sat at. Like for... one month? Heh.
Ray openly stared at him at thatstatement. The offended look dispersed from his face, replaced with the one of worry - which was much more like his natural reaction - as his green eyes went a bit wider than they should normally go. Does he really mean that? No, he can't re...
"I only drank that kickass tea you made me, you know. That was big of you." The demon winked to him, and Ray didn't know if he's serious or maybe he just makes fun of him right now, but his doubts disappeared as a loud growl escaped from Kyle's stomach, giving him away.
Ray took a sip of fanta from his glass. "Bad financial situation, eh?" he asked, but his voice didn't sound too ironic, "Are you homeless too maybe?"
The tattooed guy breathed out a small puff of smoke and looked at Ray a bit skeptically. Dirty innuendo flashed in his vanilla eyes. "Who knows? But... Are you inviting me over to live with you just now? Mm, I'm in."
Ray just laughed at it. Nice joke, sure. But at the same time, he was kind of relieved by the guy's behaviour. If Kyle just let him go like that, even after Ray rejected him, it would be a bit strange, and the reason that stood behind his sudden reappearance would be highly improbable. But he still seemed not to give up the fight, making his unexpected visit in Ray's new house quite believable. Or was he acting? Ray was suspicious at everything now.
Maybe over-suspicious, he though, shaking his head a bit.
"I'm moving away to live with my granny soon, so I can't take you in, sorry to disappoint you."
Granny, my ass, thought the demon, and grinned at Ray to show just how much he believes that, and leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms and legs, yawning and letting out a small cheer when the pizza finally made it to their table.
-
Ray glanced at Kyle, trying to suppress the thoughts that came swirling into his head as he watched the guy eat. The way he held pizza and caught cheese and little slices of pepperoni, the way he leaned on the chair, everything... it all reminded him of Dave. For a short moment he felt like he was being mocked at, but on the second thought this wasn't possible, and he just blamed it on his oversensitive imagination, sighing and gnawing on his own pizza.
The demon devoured half the pizza giving out some pleased not too coherent sounds as he ate, and reached to steal from Ray's part even before Ray started on his second piece. When he at 3/4 of it, he yawned again and pulled on leg onto the chair, hugging his knee to his face and looking at Ray from above it.
He ignored the dirty, faceless cat which jumped on their table some time ago, poking the plates and glasses with his soft paws, making them move slightly from time to time, what to demon's great disappointment Ray didn't seem to notice.
When the food disappeared from the table completely, Ray looked at the white haired man again. "So, Kyle... if you need someone to talk to, you have half an hour. And then we say bye bye, and you stop haunting me, right?"
The demon smirked. Haunting. That's one pretty exact word you used right here, Ray.
"Oh, why just half an hour, Ray? That's mean, you know, I could talk to you for months. I'm your fan since the very moment you said my lenses are cool." He smiled and looked at Ray mysteriously motioning for him to lean over the table, almost chuckling as he almost got stabbed in the eye with cat's tail."Just..." the demon whispered in his ear when Ray hesitantly obeyed, "...they are no lenses." And he withdrew with a smug grin on his face, looking at Ray's slightly dilated pupils, relishing in the knowledge he is messing with Ray's head so much. He didn't know how very stressed Ray was even without him or the reason why he was going to board the plane so soon. He guessed it must be about bad boys, but he didn't really care or pity this little skinny guy. He decided to be merciless asshole. Sounded like fun.
-
They didn't really talk much for this next several minutes, because every single time Ray tried to ask some question, the demon answered him with question as well, or kept interrupting him with some cutting remarks. The whole conversation couldn't be anything but faked anyway. The demon didn't feel like inventing a whole new story of his life now just for Ray and so he avoided answering questions that Ray wouldn't really care to have answered anyway, while Ray lied to him on everything more personal and it showed even if the demon didn't know.
Dave let Ray pay for the pizza, even though he had his wallet with him. Ray owed him much more than a crappy meal.
They said goodbye and after the demon turned down Ray's half-hearted offer to give him a lift to whatever destination around the town he wanted to go search for luck in now, the white-haired man marched away, swaying his hips seductively and disappearing round the corner.
Where he of course stopped immediately, peeking at Ray from behind the quoin, watching him stare in the space for half a minute more and then get back in the car, starting the engine, turning into some narrow street and finally vanishing from sight.
-
Dave couldn't wait for the day when he tells Ray everything. This will be best part of it all. But now he had to be patient. He needed to investigate first, plan; discover everything Ray was hiding from him. Stop him from leaving anywhere in the first place.
He couldn't read his thoughts unfortunately. Of course from Ray's things and all the household items he had touched, Dave gathered some memories and information on the guy, but nothing really recent, nothing that would let him predict future, get to know Ray's intentions for the incoming days, or even know what happened recently. All these memories weren't old enough for the items to preserve some part of them yet.
He needed to fix it. Search more. Far more. Follow Ray. Spy on Ray. Something.
Or maybe... yes, the demon had even a better idea. He'll simply go back to annoy the guy more. It will be more fun that way. The demon didn't feel like being lonely. And anyway, there was supposed to be seduction involved, wasn't there?
The demon smirked at this.
He was going to make Ray want him.
He was also going to freak Ray out as far as he could, and do many other things and then... then it will be time to finally get our hands and paws bloody, isn't that right, my little friend? He thought glancing at the cat.
-
And so Dave picked a direction, crossing a few streets by foot and then, noticing someone's bike propped against a wall, he took it without a single prick of conscience, and cycled as fast as he could, leaving the dead cat behind.
It'll be back anyway.
Dave just felt it.
-
Ray returned to his new home two hours later, with a bag full of food and a big empty suitcase he'll need to pack his most valuable belongings that he wanted to take with him on the plane in. He rested the suitcase on steps and started rummaging his pockets, searching for the key.
He was a bit tired already. He will take the blankets out and lie down on the floor maybe. When he wakes up he will unpack a few things. Like a microwave. Yes, that was an idea. At least he'll eat something warm. And then he will spend the evening sitting on the single rickety chair and looking out from the window, or something. He didn't even have a TV here. Anyway, running water and electricity was already a sort of success.
-
But just before he put the key into the keyhole, the door opened wide on their own accord and...
"Welcome home, Ray" chirped the demon cheerfully.
