Prologue
March 5th
A loud beep propelled the sleeping computer technician towards the ceiling.
Shaking the sleep from his eyes, Gregory King straightened up in his uncomfortable desk chair and peered at the computer screen. Right before his eyes stood a young woman, her auburn hair tied in a loose braid, as she hurried from the outside of the hotel to her car. As always, she was dressed in her professional outfit—heels, a plain skirt, and a blouse. Today’s combination of the simple black heels and skirt paired with a white blouse was a striking classic black-and-white beauty that only she could pull off.
A wide grin graced his face as he leaned back in his chair. Watching her run through the semi-dark parking lot was worth falling asleep at work again. Gregory was pleased he’d finally had enough sense to program the high-tech laptop to alert him whenever she appeared.
His cell phone buzzed and began to spin in circles. “King,” he answered politely, rolling his brown eyes at being interrupted.
“Hi, honey. I was wondering what you wanted for dinner tonight.”
“You know I don’t care sweetheart. Whatever you feel like picking up is fine with me. You always cook, so feel free to get carryout.”
“Okay, I’ll see you in about forty minutes or so?”
“Yep, I’m on my way out now. See you at home.”
Before his wife could reply, Gregory flipped the phone closed. He turned his attention back to the laptop screen and blew a kiss towards the young woman climbing into a beat-up Honda before closing the lid.
“I’ll see you later, Lissa,” he whispered.
