You were this entity on the edge of my life -
Unattainable and overprized.
A phantom;
The ghost of something I once possessed,
But had tragically lost and could never own again.
How is it that you fall into my lap
Summer after summer
Year after year?
Is it luck? Lust? Sheer fate?
Or could it be that L-word
That scares so many away?
That four-letter word that I have always known
For you and only you - forever?
You doubt your feelings; you lack trust.
But if there ever was anyone in your life
Who would be there,
Unflinching,
Through thick and thin and good and bad,
It has always been me:
That girl you continually find
Summer after summer
Year after year
The one who has always been yours,
Even when she wasn't
And has always loved you,
Even when she got nothing in return.
So don't squander this precious gift -
The time we've wrongly been given
Summer after summer
Year after year
