Lonely Journey on a Trail
The trail winds around mountain and hill,
Through wood and over brook;
And now and again from time to time
A passer-by gives a brief look.
Very rarely I'll find an occassion odd
Where I chance for a month or a day,
A stranger I've known forever
To walk with until we part ways.
Twice, maybe thrice, I stopped for a spell
Unable to tally the math,
Thinking I'd seen my beacon
Only to wander off the path.
Tonight I think I see a flame afar,
More ignis fatuus though it must seem;
For whence can one continue to hope
To follow another beam?
Yet if I do strike forth all courage,
Seeking glory and riches untold,
And find once again an illusion
What price pay I who was bold?
I will journey alone down a trail called Life
As I have for many long nights,
Still searching far and searching near
For one discreet beacon of light...
